Default Engine noise during ilde

I haven noticed this faint random knocks coming from the both sides of the engine during idle. It seems to be more apparent after I drove the car only a few miles. The frequency of the knocks is random - it would knoks 3x, wait a couple of seconds, knocks 2x etc...

I took it to the freeway for a 10 miles drive and pop the hood, I couldn't hear it....

Any idea whether it is normal? Thanks...

car has 40k miles and oil change every 3-4k miles.

Check ur oil lvl, if good then what oil have u used plz include weights and brand and oil filter, any engine codes?

If lvl is good, then theres might be:
1) oil delivery problems (pump, filter, or oil pick up tube is loose)
2) ur vvel is beaten and there are gaps btw valve and stems, cause that sound.

oil level is right below the upper dot on the dip stick and I use Castrol 5-30w every 3-4k miles.

what would cause the vvel be beaten? car has 40k miles and runs great.

I may spark debate, but that is what is needed to help u solve ur problem.

Z owners I talk to say u need to ensure ur using ester oil or ester based. I switched from whatever stock ester oil Nissan uses to Redline 5w30 which is ester based and I noticed a few more knocks here and there. I plan to try Royal Purple next time I change oil.

If your solve ur problem, oil or not, please post here so we can all learn.

Hope this helps.

are you referring to the vvel knock? thought it was only effect some early g37 models?

I plan to use mobil one (currently using Castrol dino oil) on the next oil change. there should be improvement if it is oil related.

Viscosity of the oil, try nissan easter oil just to see if it stops the tapping. That oil is created to keep vvel noise down.

If the noise is there after u change to easter oil, u need to seek a nissan vq37vhr technician/mechanic. Gl.

some interesting observation.... when I first started the engine cold, no noise. Drive it on the fwy for over 10 miles, no noise. it seems to have the knock only if I drive it for a few miles during idle.

I persinally think you are all juat being picky unless you have a reason to be worried about engine noise . If it is extremely loud like when a piston knocks then yeah.

I hear all sorts of stuff in and out of my car and its only at 7500 miles. Everything is working fine as well. Nissan ester oil in engine, redline in tranny and diff. Motul fluid in clutch system. I hear tapping noises, transmission noises, you name it.

I know i had this before, on start ups the engine isn't at idle right away it takes some warm up time to drop to idle ~650rpm thats when u hear noise, oil delivery is at its slowest, and if viscosity is bad there isnt enough oil between the vvel metal to metal contact, causing that noise

Am pretty sure ur oil is the problem so get some easter oil,
I my self saw that that went away when i put royal purple, it isnt easter oil, but just good quality.

My car makes this knocking noise only if I restart a warm engine, never when cold. It goes away in about 5 seconds. I am going to change oil filters. I am using a K&N filter and Mobil 1 oil 5 w 30. It is not a bad knock. I wonder why it only does it by starting a warm engine?

Use a Nissan oil filter. This will go away.
