Noise when shifting into 5th gear

Sometimes when shifting into 5th gear I get some lite resistance, and right before it locks into place it would make some kind of grind noise and instantly goes away. The car drives normal in 5th gear otherwise. I try shifting it slowly and it still sometimes does it, and other times it just works as normal.

What fluid are you running? Did it just start happening now that it is cooling off outside?

steve216 10-15-2015 09:52 PM

Fluid is still from stock, 46k miles so far. This is a recent issue, don't know if the cooler weather maybe a factor.

common synchronous grind in 5th, if its frequent take it to the dealer, call it a lemon.

if warranty is up, put Redline oil brand in it, check manual for the correct weight and if it still is happening take it apart change synchronous, or by NEW transmission. about 2K

Sounds like your 5th gear synchro is going. If you're still under warranty, you can maybe get a new transmission out of it. If you're out of warranty, try to minimize wear on that synchro. Be patient with your 5th gear shift and try not to grind it :twocents:

so I guess this would fall under the powertrain coverage 60month/60k miles?

JARblue 10-16-2015 08:31 AM

Yes

Yes. Same thing happened to me and Infiniti replaced the tranny under warranty.

MAMotorsports 10-16-2015 09:00 AM

Exactly what all of them said. Stock fluid is not helping but the syncro's go bad on these.

If you are not under warranty, shoot me a PM and I can get you some Redline fluid pretty quickly.

MT85 is what I've been running for the last couple tranny changes and no issues. Good stuff:tup:

JARblue 10-16-2015 10:56 AM

:iagree:

Been running MT-85 for the last 55K miles

SurfDog 10-16-2015 11:41 AM

Mine did this too... free tranny installed by Nissan dealer with my 100k mile powertrain warrenty (well, okay I had a 50 dollar deductible...).

Funny thing is, I blew the synchro at a track day with a not so great high RPM UPSHIFT!! To this day, I really don't know how that happened. I've heared a lot of these 5th gear synchros go bad so not I run Redline to help keep my new tranny happy

If I bring it in the dealer with my mods(FI cats/exhaust,gen3 CAI), will they hassle me.

JARblue 10-16-2015 09:58 PM

They shouldn't. But it's probably less hassle to take it to a different dealer if they do :twocents:

I had basically the same mods at the time and they didn't bother me
