Noise when shifting into 5th gear
Sometimes when shifting into 5th gear I get some lite resistance, and right before it locks into place it would make some kind of grind noise and instantly goes away. The car drives normal in 5th gear otherwise. I try shifting it slowly and it still sometimes does it, and other times it just works as normal.

What fluid are you running? Did it just start happening now that it is cooling off outside?
|
Fluid is still from stock, 46k miles so far. This is a recent issue, don't know if the cooler weather maybe a factor.

common synchronous grind in 5th, if its frequent take it to the dealer, call it a lemon.
if warranty is up, put Redline oil brand in it, check manual for the correct weight and if it still is happening take it apart change synchronous, or by NEW transmission. about 2K |
Sounds like your 5th gear synchro is going. If you're still under warranty, you can maybe get a new transmission out of it. If you're out of warranty, try to minimize wear on that synchro. Be patient with your 5th gear shift and try not to grind it :twocents:

so I guess this would fall under the powertrain coverage 60month/60k miles?

Yes

Exactly what all of them said. Stock fluid is not helping but the syncro's go bad on these.
If you are not under warranty, shoot me a PM and I can get you some Redline fluid pretty quickly. |

Been running MT-85 for the last 55K miles |
Mine did this too... free tranny installed by Nissan dealer with my 100k mile powertrain warrenty (well, okay I had a 50 dollar deductible...).
Funny thing is, I blew the synchro at a track day with a not so great high RPM UPSHIFT!! To this day, I really don't know how that happened. I've heared a lot of these 5th gear synchros go bad so not I run Redline to help keep my new tranny happy |
If I bring it in the dealer with my mods(FI cats/exhaust,gen3 CAI), will they hassle me.
|
They shouldn't. But it's probably less hassle to take it to a different dealer if they do :twocents:

I had basically the same mods at the time and they didn't bother me |
Isn't this also a symptom of a clutch saying bye bye. Start looking for an upgraded clutch and flywheel.....and might as well change the CSC.

Not always the case. My clutch was still perfect when I upgraded it for the turbo build and the dealer still replaced my tranny under warranty. |
I just had this happen to me yesterday at a track day. I've been running Redline fluids for 4 years now. Mine is a 2009 with 38,000 miles. So I guess I'm out of luck?? All other gears, it shifts fine. Just 5th gear grinds. I didn't miss a shift or anything, did nothing different, just driving hard. I can try changing the transmission fluid again, but I doubt that will help. Any suggestions?

So did a search on the forum about noise when shifting to 5th gear and this was close but not quite what I'm experiencing. When I shift into 5th I hear a slight chirp noise that sounds like it is inside the car. No grinding noise and the shifts are smooth. It doesn't happen all the time and I can never seem to replicate the noise right after it happens. The Z is brand new with less than 2,000 miles on it. Any thoughts?

With a new gearbox it is probably not your synchros yet. (That comes later). I'd run the tranny for 5000 break in miles then put in some quality gearbox oil like redline. |
