Oil overfill

I checked my oil this morning and almost below the L mark.
L o-l----------o H So, I went to autozone and bought a 1 quart of oil. Pour like about 70% of oil into the engine and the reading now goes up like this
L o-----------lo H ...Do you think this is safe or I over refilled my engine? it's almost at the H dot mark though.

You're within tolerances according to the dip stick. I don't think it's a problem. Now this is assuming that's the oil level when measured cold (engine has set overnight and all the oil has drained to its lowest point) and your Z is on a level surface.

Park on a level ground and wait 15 minutes than check your oil.

I already did not just even 15 minutes but almost 4 hours when I checked it.

over the H is too much, AT the H is fine

are you talking about the dot?

bradz 10-21-2009 01:52 PM

so guys what is your input about it? any answer will be greatly appreciated.

Car Bibles : The Engine Oil Bible
Read the part about overfilling the engine oil. Enough to scare me.
I'd personally drain a little out. Won't take you more than 15 minutes.

Is this your first car?? Slightly over has no impact at all. Just don't go 1/2 to 1 qt over or you'll have issues.

With the engine being warmed up after getting to Auto Zone, you should have added "no more than half a quart". You can't get an accurate oil level measurement on a warmed up engine. Adding just a half a quart, would keep your engine safe(not to high/not to low). You could check the oil level later when your car has sat(when the engine is cold).

I disagree! It can make your engine sluggish and restrict power and performance. Because of the added pressure it takes to pump, the over added amount!
And you could spring an oil leak, due to the added pressure on the system!

Maybe you missed the part where I said "Slightly".....

His isn't even up to the H.

Yes, I saw Slightly! I still don't agree with you. bradz measurement has nothing to do with my disagreeing with you.

bradz 10-21-2009 04:27 PM

yeah I waited overnight to have an accurate measurement and the reading is still the same as I stated above. i'm in a flat ground when I did it so i'm sure my reading is accurate.

spearfish25 10-21-2009 04:34 PM

Why is this a debate if he's not even above the 'H' mark? I could understand all this back-and-forth if the reading was:

L o----------------o H |

If it's between the L and H, leave it alone dude. If it's still bothering you enough that you don't trust the high and low indicators on the dip stick, crawl underneath, crack the drain bolt and let some out. Then you can worry about the crush washer being retightened without being replaced...which would be a bigger worry if you ask me. Thus, if it's between the indicators, leave it alone.

You probably like to scare little children on Halloween too, don't you?....LOL..... I guarantee you, a 1/4" difference on the stick (my def. of "slightly"). Won't make a hilll of beans difference in pumping losses or over pressurization... There's a good amount of "idiot proofing" built into all modern engines.Try it and see...
