Need new motor options

I am coming to seek the help of fellow 370z members. A while back I had a post about my motor blowing and after a long battle it seems Nissan will not be doing anything to assist me. I am looking for help/ ideas on what i should do.

Do i put a new motor in? if so where is best to get one?
Do i put a used motor in? resell value worse? Where to get?

Is it worth to spend any extra to get performance while replacing a motor?

Is it even worth to put a motor back in?

I looked on google briefly but hoping someone here might know more than me

JARblue 02-09-2015 11:24 AM

Get a VK56 engine from a Nissan Titan and drop it in there :yum:

You might be able to find a used VQ on here or eBay.

Is it worth it? My guess would be no. But you don't know until you get the numbers together.

Unless you are planning to drive the car into the ground after you get it fixed or just have a connection with it and really want to fix it, I would probably be looking at another car even if I still wanted another Z.

Array 02-09-2015 11:24 AM

My guess would be do you want to spend what it would cost to put a new/used motor in and hope this new/used one has no issues while also obtaining a warranty on said motor.

I'm also located in the midwest area and our cars resale value is already bad so no doubt this will make it worse, poke around shops asking for some rough estimate prices on a used drop in, but if you plan on doing a drop in, then you might as well run it into the ground

If all else fails part it out

kholy 02-09-2015 12:30 PM

Really sad part is the car only had 30k miles on it and i still owe on it.

JWillis72 02-09-2015 12:37 PM

What went wrong at 30k that Nissan isn't covering?

JARblue 02-09-2015 12:44 PM

That's what happens when you don't change your oil :ugh:

kholy 02-09-2015 12:47 PM

Short story: Driving 35 mph car stopped, wouldn't turn over. Had towed to my house and i tinkered with it and could get nothing. Took to nissan they told me motor blown (couldn't really say whats wrong or what caused it) but since i was over on an oil change they wouldn't cover and told me the "Motor blown due to lack of oil change, Customer needs new motor". Since then i had it towed to another mechanic and he tore into the motor to find the real cause of the motor and he found that a gasket on the front of the motor was blown and i lost oil pressure through that. he said my oil looked fine (except for metal shavings) and i was not low on oil. I tried to call consumer affairs with Nissan but since he is not a Nissan dealer they will not even hear me out.

PICS of gasket:

5,800.00 gets you this to your door:
Z1 VQ HR / VHR Performance Shortblock (Stage 2)

TopgunZ 02-09-2015 03:47 PM

Part out? I think it would def. be worth it to just find a used motor and drop it in and then resell.

OR... Get a new shortblock from Z1 or IPP and then put your heads on it.

JWillis72 02-09-2015 03:48 PM

Who is IPP?

Import parts pro. They have been in the game a long time.

Was it really related to viscosity breakdown?? :wtf2:

JWillis72 02-09-2015 06:35 PM

Look above, he said oil leak.

Nope. It was a head gasket leak. His mechanic said the oil was fine. But the oil change interval was Nissan's ace in the hole to avoid having to cover it under warranty. Crooks... :shakes head:

Spooler 02-09-2015 06:48 PM

Put a long block in it. A short block may work if the heads are OK.

Just looked at the pics. I only see one with a slight gasket tear. I doubt that would cause you to eat the motor. The leak would
have gone right back to the oil pan being it was in the front cover. I see nothing to indicate a major oil leak. Hate to say it but it looks like Nissan was correct. Just chalk it up as an Oh F. moment and get her fixed. Long block would be the way to go for sure. If you can find a low mileage engine out of an 12' or up it would be your best beat and it will have the factory oil cooler. The heads have a good
chance of being junk on your current engine. Price around and get all of your options, even a long block from Nissan. Sometimes they
may cut you a good deal. You never know until you ask.

TopgunZ 02-09-2015 11:25 PM

Damn. My bad. Yeah thats a rough one. Id def not part it though. If anything drop a used block in and fund another one. Or get a new/short/long block and give her the juice!

kholy 02-10-2015 08:12 AM

So I am leaning towards this motor right now. can you guys give me your thoughts

370Z Engine Low Miles VQ37VHR | eBay

He mentioned it was from a car that was rear ended and totaled. He also said he got it to drop in a 240 but decided to sell it. 90 day guarantee also

Elmo370z 02-10-2015 01:59 PM

i would call ipp and maybe just throwing a stage 0 short block in your car

TopgunZ 02-10-2015 02:04 PM

:iagree:

And with that you can still put 600+ to it reliably all day.

If you need anything for the motor besides the shortblock..I have it all for sale. Heads and all.

kholy 02-11-2015 10:34 AM

I ended up purchasing the motor with 5k miles on it. Wish me luck

DIGItonium 02-11-2015 04:57 PM

Good plan. Just get a relatively stock motor, hopefully good motor, swap, change fluids, etc., and get yourself going again. Then continue paying off your car.

Motor gets delivered today and hopefully in by the weekend.

(fingers crossed)

kholy 02-17-2015 09:07 AM

So i don't have to send back the core of this motor so i should have a bunch of spare parts... should i keep or sell them off? thoughts?

JARblue 02-17-2015 09:09 AM

Do you have the space to store them? I might consider holding on to them until you are comfortable there are no problems with the new motor. But if you need to recoup some funds, I can understand the desire to sell them.

I do have a place to store... what would be some good parts that you think i could recoup some of the funds?

Looks like the same gasket that commonly fails on the 5th gen Altima 3.5. For me, it was the gasket behind the timing chain cover. It's built into the cover, so the cover had to be replaced. Mine went out around 80k miles. My extended warranty covered new chains, tensioners, cover with gasket and water pump. Fortunately for me, it only caused a slight ticking noise at start up and no damage was done.

Sound like a used motor is the way to go in your case.

Thanks for the info, This is exactly what happened to mine... you can see the gasket just blown out in my pictures too... Nissan tech's were unable to find this and i had to go to another mechanic to find the problem. Now Nissan wont cover anything because he was a non Nissan Mechanic who found it...

Some reviews will be had about Nissan of Mentor... also contacting the BBB

Silly Rabbit 02-18-2015 09:05 AM

kholy 02-18-2015 10:34 AM

kholy 02-18-2015 10:10 PM

I've also officially filed my complaint with the BBB... hopefully they can be of some help... I'd at least like to get the money Nissan of Mentor stole from me to tell me absolutely nothing...
