Sweet!

My rear hatch on my '09 is starting to get a bit sticky and not popping all the way up. Gonna pull that weight out tonight.

johnham 11-07-2014 05:26 PM

You can also pop the rubber covers off of the springs and then put a washer inside. Thats what i did and havent had a problem since. I will remove the weight anyway for weight reduction (:

Years later, This is still an awesome write up! I've had my 09 for about a month now and my hatching was sticking when I pushed the open button. Works everytime like magic now. Thanks! :ughdance:

Stssjester 01-14-2015 07:51 PM

Just removed the weight. AWESOME WRITE UP! SUPER EASY! THANKS!

And I'll be here. My family doesn't sell cars. We drive them until they get totaled.
I'm just praying the site doesn't turn to my350z...

Aren't we all?

Nice DIY! just did it to my 2015 nismo. I didn't have a pry tool, but a butter knife works just as well!

AV8rZ 06-12-2015 08:10 PM

Just took my weight out and put a nickel on each of the springs! Only thing you forgot to mention for tools was a nice cold beer. Thanks DE and all the other pioneers on here who have made life easy for us who couldn't afford our Z until later! NoLaKrewe, I'm in Baton Rouge and have inky owned my car for a couple months but hope to cross paths with y'all sooner than later.

Step 9 is to drink a beer! And give rep

I have been known to be a little ambitious in that area. And I will gladly give rep just don't know how.

Signed,

rambunctious 11-28-2015 07:29 PM

After 5 years of owning the car, I finally found the solution! Thanks so much! No more sticking!

Hotrodz 02-06-2016 12:30 PM

Yo DE, I just completed this along with installing Z1 mega struts! It work like charm, thanks brother and you have been repped! :tiphat:

Morfiy 02-06-2016 02:33 PM

Did the same recently ! Thanks to author

jojodrum3 02-19-2016 11:31 AM

I bought a 2014 sport touring with 100 miles on it in April 2015 and the trunk started sticking after a couple months. It got better after some waxy chain lube but it won't open after it's closed for a while but usually will open after just opening/closing. We'll see how a warranty claim goes. Nice write up for sure!

asaadkharsa 08-27-2016 11:58 AM

can you show me how you make the new hole please

ryennn 09-10-2016 04:51 AM

Found this and did it to my Base 2016. Had this problem since I installed my Amuse wing, made my hatch super heavy and would only unlock/unhook if I press the button and lift up at the same time. Super pain in the *** when both my hands are full lol.

This helped a little bit, it now unlocks if I press the button twice, but it doesn't pop up with one press like it did before I had a wing haha.

Going to try the penny trick tomorrow, couldn't figure out how to get the rubber off the spring lol...hopefully both these tricks/mods together will help lift that huge wing.

Jimbo370 09-10-2016 11:05 AM

mine took 2 pennies both sides. I had added a wing. It works most of the time:tiphat:

DEpointfive0 09-10-2016 02:42 PM

The amuse wing adds a LOT of weight

It won't cure that problem, lol. But it'll help a bit.

I have the Z1 extra high pressure struts with my Amuse, and holy crap it opens angrily, lol

ryennn 09-11-2016 12:21 AM

So I added 2 nickels to the bottom of each spring and it worked! Finally I don't have to use both hands to open my trunk! Hopefully it stays this way :(

Thanks again for this DIY fix/mod! I was very hesitant to take the panel off myself because of the clips, especially those white ones! Was going to bring it to stealership to get it looked at, but I just went ahead and did it; and I'm glad I did!

SG4247 11-14-2016 10:09 AM

Thanks for the DIY! completed mine this morning!

JustinP 04-03-2017 08:55 AM

Good removal

I wish I didn't have to take this weight out, but man it sure is nice to have the hatch pop up with one hand!!!
2014 Touring Sport, 16,000 miles. Took 15 minutes to do.

OTW Z-Boy 04-28-2017 12:14 PM

Yep this worked couple of pennies inside each hatch spring boot and good to go (no weight removal)

Good thread- this is almost certainly the function of this part rather than making the hatch easier to close. If that was their aim, why not simply make the gas struts less strong.

Lots of oems use mass dampers for NVH reasons, limiting vibration or resonance.

BlackElectric 09-22-2017 08:29 PM

Took this weight out of my 2016 today. Can confirm it weighs 2Ibs 7oz.

Maybe, but some have it, some don't, and it makes literally díck difference on NVH

imazman 12-15-2017 07:07 AM

2011 Nismo had it...removed it...now I go much faster ;-)

geddit 06-12-2019 11:46 AM

Remove the weights from both cars and spent 60 cents buying 16 washers (4 for each car) for spring helpers. Sorted..

Since this post I've had to add 4 more coins on each side. I cant add anymore else it the rubber doesn't close/fit.

Problem has been back

Nissan already took off my trunk lid weight

I have read about the useless weight in the rear trunk lid. I was bored and thought I would have a go at releasing some weight on the Z! To my surprise the weight was not part of my factory install. I guess I am happy. I wanted the satisfaction to remove it myself though...

Hmmm, I wonder if my '16 Nismo has it? Too lazy to find out but I have no issues with my hatch so I guess I will leave it. I'll bet the weight was left out of all redesigned Nismo's ('15 and up). Maybe someone with an earlier Nismo will chime in.

Javier 08-01-2020 08:07 PM

My understanding is that the weight was added to keep the hatch from buffeting and vibrating at high speeds. I spoke to a friend of mine that works at Nissan R&D.

I've never heard any buffeting coming from the hatch since removing it.

fusion0979 10-23-2020 12:46 PM

Removed today the weight from MY2013 Nismo

This helped, and it now pops up if I press the button once!

geokots 03-16-2021 12:57 PM

I tried this (weight reduction and 2 nickels each side) and it worked for a while but now it won't fully open. Does anyone know where to get spring replacement that's either bigger or stronger than stock?

filip00 08-21-2021 12:55 PM

Just pulled out this weight out of my Sep 2009 370z.
The hatch seems to close exactly the same as before, whereas when opening it, sometimes it pops fully open (one handed opening), sometimes I need to help it up. Anyway, I'm happy to have removed it.

I've got these springs. Very high quality and the hatch opens everytime
