Again, glad I could help!

Taking the weight out prolongs the life of the springs as well as the struts AND allows people to put sound deadening without worrying about the hatch not opening

kenchan 06-05-2013 04:36 PM

ummm... so wat did you guys do with the weight?

im trying to decide if i should just recycle it or keep it for no reason or...

I kept it... I don't really know why though... But it's just sitting in the garage...

03g35coupe6mt 06-05-2013 09:42 PM

too keep the other parts company ?

Enough 06-06-2013 02:27 PM

It looks like a mass damper to eliminate some resonance, rattle or vibration. Maybe from the exhaust at certain engine speeds of from road input.

kenchan 06-06-2013 03:02 PM

it looks more like a smashed turtle.

When i'm pissed I pick something up out of the spare parts bin and throw it or smash it onto the ground. It prevents me from hurting anything else that might actually matter!

I've been told that it's to help petit women on Japan to close the hatch. Why it's rubberized and overly complicated, not a clue

kenchan 06-06-2013 07:18 PM

i think it's there for those that dont have a spoiler the weight helps the hatch close...but not too heavy that it won't open the gate when a spoiler is installed... :ugh:

yeah right.. :ugh2:

bascially anyone with a spoiler should remove it.

SouthArk370Z 06-06-2013 07:20 PM

It may serve more than one purpose. Since the hatch is light-weight Aluminum, the weight may give the hatch some extra inertia to make the latch when closing. It can give the consumer the impression of higher quality (hatch doesn't feel as flimsy and has a bigger "thunk" when it closes). Personally, I like Enough's anti-NVH theory.

SPOHN 09-04-2013 07:30 AM

Removed my rear windshield. Installing lexan. It's amazing how lite the hatch is without the glass.

Noveske_ 09-12-2013 05:36 PM

Great write-up! I just did this with a credit card and three or four minutes of my time. My 09 didn't have any 10mm screws holding the panel on either—Just the clips.

It fixed the sticking problem, and it's not any more difficult to close. :D

ETA: A buddy and I did this again last night on a 2010 while removing the window tinting, and it had the 10mm screws.

It fixed the sticking problem and the hatch is noticeably lighter now, though not any more difficult to close. Easily the simplest mod I've done yet, plus I have a new paperweight :D

Thanks for the DIY DE5.

Home bored today and last night I had some groceries and remembered how it sucked to lift and hit button, so...

http://www.the370z.com/members/7spee...unk-weight.jpg

Guess its an 09 thing just like you Noveske I don't have an bolts. At first I was like wtf is DE5 talking about, because I can just pull all panels off.

Now let me read up on that clutch helper spring..........

Glass is only marginally less heavy that steel, volume for volume !!

It is why god permitted Du Pont to invent Lexan !!

NissanGuy23 03-15-2014 10:16 AM

Just did this...thanks DE h:tiphat:atch opens easier now (can do it with one hand)

1325 03-16-2014 07:40 PM

rgunho 04-03-2014 11:29 PM

kenchan 05-13-2014 04:45 PM

im still confused as to wat to do with the black metal thing...

Optimiser 05-25-2014 02:50 AM

I have a 2012 Z and in here in Australia we get as standard, amongst other things, a rear windscreen wiper and the non Nismo smaller wing. I haven't looked yet but I wonder if having those counters the need to have the weight.:horse:

ZombieZZ 07-17-2014 03:51 PM

Just did this in about 10 mins. Fastest weight I've ever lost. Now I can one hand the trunk thanks first attempt to take her apart good confidence builder for a newbie. Don't know how to give rep points. Educate me
