Does anybody else use WAZE app in car?

I have been using the WAZE app on my dash and love it. Just recently it gave me a heads up of the location of no less than 3 speed traps on my 45 minute drive into denver. The police in my area are using lazer now (not easy to detect radar) WAZE is great for keeping my situational awareness up.

I like that my fellow motorists can start tracking the movements of law enforcment (and all sorts of other road hazards), so we collectivley can keep each other out of harms way.

Everytime i'm on the interstate. great app!

yep, me too , just started using it about 2 weeks ago. Live traffic reports is far better than my stand alone garmin with live traffic. Go figure, the power of user created content I suppose.

nmjaxx9 09-24-2012 01:30 PM

use this all the time there is backups or traffic jams, love it, Im part of the daily Hartford commuting crew, I feel like I use it more than I contribute though, maybe I should start posting updates. :rofl2:

SurfDog 09-24-2012 07:47 PM

I like it only takes two or three button pushes to report a "hazard" (car on shoulder cop etc)

I have avoided several Hazards in the last year and am therefore a loyal user.

With laser guns so prevalent now, radar detectors are becoming less useful on detecting certain "hazards". You got to have crowd sourced traffic info (like WAZE) to feel like you not barreling into bad situations.

I wish I could somehow recommend a day of WAZE use to all our members. I know 90 percent would be grateful for the tip!!

:iagree: I think a lot of people would benefeit from this app. Well developed and made, and the user interface is amazing and helpful, it gives me updates on traffic accidents faster than most news channel feeds because its LIVE 24/7 and immediate :driving::tup:

Havent had an opportunity to check it out at the app store...what is cost and does it work on all iphones? I have a 4s (I think)....

SurfDog 09-25-2012 11:14 AM

4s is what I use too.

It is free!

Probably the best app I have.

Only drawback is that to work it needs to be in data coverage.

SurfDog 09-25-2012 11:17 AM

I feel about this app the way I felt when I discovered pandora. It is so great I can't wait to pass it along to my buddies.

blackcherry20 09-25-2012 12:13 PM

 OK-if we are sharing good apps I love Shazam too....it wil find a song for you from "listening" to it on the radio....also love pandora. I will def be looking up the Waze. If I like it-reps to you Surfdog!

SurfDog 09-25-2012 12:20 PM

muzik212 09-25-2012 03:44 PM

Love it. I've been using it for a few weeks, was able to avoid 2 major jams and one speed trap in PA that got by my Passport.

SurfDog 09-25-2012 03:51 PM

Ca and Co (where I drive) are switching to laser which beat passport etc every time. WAZE it is!

You’ll be surprised how many people use it, it really is a well thought out app. Also if you keep it on while driving, you log miles, and are able to unlock new moods, ability to post reports and stuff. If you need to know who around your area uses it, just link the app to Facebook, you should find fellow Wazers there.

If not you can join a group like I did, who commute to the same place everyday. Its pretty cool some people even message you and let you know if they haven’t seen you on the road, (to remind you or make sure you aren’t still asleep) since you both bump heads around the same time in the morning. I actually do see the same people every morning on my commute, and some of them are Wazers! Anyways good luck with your Indy trip, just add a group from there ahead of time so you get their info.:driving:

w0rM 09-26-2012 12:14 PM

I downloaded this a couple of months ago. Love it!

VDC_OFF 09-26-2012 01:24 PM

Tried it out this morning for the first time. Was surprised to see so many people on there. Cops were being reported as soon as they entered the freeway before I could even report it.

c41006 09-26-2012 01:52 PM

Been using it for a day now and I have to say I am impressed

blackcherry20 09-26-2012 02:43 PM

Downloaded to my ipad-showed up on my iphone too! Lol! Anyway-started logging miles as soon as i left home this morning. Will have almost 100 mi. By tonight ...thx Mmjaxx for indy group suggestion...like this app already too (see C4 comment).

Tazicon 09-26-2012 03:07 PM

I have it on my Droid thanks to this thread, looking for it on the ipad now.

SurfDog 09-26-2012 06:14 PM

I started this thread kind of like a public service announcement. I'm hoping the word spreads in the forum. This is one of those must have kinda things for many of us Zoomers.

I've been using this for a few days now, seems like a good app.

One huge question though, does it notify you in any way when you are nearing a reported police area? If so, do I have to be in navigate mode or can I just drive around with waze open and still be notified?

By notify if you mean a pop up message then no, what you can do is if you are on a highway or street you know are usually are full of cops, or you aren't sure if there are any, you can click menu, reports and click Police and see the police who are nearby or ones that are reported. Remember not all of them are reported. And also if you navigate to a certain spot, pick diff routes and each route will have a police icon on top of it to show you that route has cops. Also when you are driving that route you can actually see the cops in your gps. Pretty cool, I also run a radar detector app which helps too.

Also don't forget about the camera reports, speed cams are a major reason people get pulled over. :tiphat:

Dunno if you have to be in navigate mode, but it does verbalize "police reported ahead" when you are approaching a cop while "navigating".

I also know that when you stop, (like at a light or something) it starts giving you a list of all nearby reports (and showing them on map) then when you start moving again, it "re centers' on your car and shows what is ahead.

Interesting dynamic.

dastaco 09-27-2012 06:22 PM

I wonder if there is a way for it to notify me of police/speed trap/cameras ahead of me when not in navigate mode. I never drive around in navigate since I make primarily short trips to places I know.

c41006 09-27-2012 06:24 PM

This morning it notified me of a car on the shoulder ahead and I wasnt navigating so I assume it would do the same for cops but I could be wrong

SurfDog 09-28-2012 02:58 PM

Verified police ARE reported while not"navigating"

SurfDog 09-28-2012 04:19 PM

WAZE announced. "Police reported ahead" with a 2000 ft countdown to location while in map mode (not navigating to a fix). The cop was ahead on the city street I was traveling.
