DIY installation of genuine factory rear spoiler....

Hey everyone.... i just recently added a spoiler on my 370z so i thought id take some pictures while installing it myself and start a DIY page... ok here...

http://www.the370z.com/members/simot...poiler-003.jpg
BEFORE.....

http://www.the370z.com/members/simot...poiler-034.jpg
AFTER.......

STEP 1....

Changing the gas shocks on the hatch....
all you need is a a flat head for this procedure... its very simple... you just stick the flat head in the little slot on the top once u sort of pry halfway the c looking clamp on the gas shock wiggle it out and itll just pop off

http://www.the370z.com/members/simot...poiler-015.jpg

http://www.the370z.com/members/simot...poiler-014.jpg

PLEASE NOTE the hatch WILL fall after you take even just one gas shock out so please have something proping it up or a person helping you out....

ok... once you have the top of the gas shock out do the same to the bottom and the shock should be out completely... repeat this step on the other side.

http://www.the370z.com/members/simot...poiler-013.jpg

installing the new gas shocks that come with the factory spoiler is pretty much the same as taking them out pry half way the c clamp looking thing with a flat head and wiggle it in place... when installing i found it easier to install the bottom side first then the top....

STEP 2

Taking out the panel on the underside of the hatch... ok for all those who are scared to tug on the panels dont worry... i was sooo scared i was gonna break something while dont this step so heres my tips if you have a prying tool for fasteners great use it... if you dont.... like me... lol i used my fingers

http://www.the370z.com/members/simot...poiler-018.jpg

SO first wiggle ur fingers near the locking part of the hatch once you have enough space try stickin your fingers in the most outer part of the panel the side nearest to you not the inner side.... the orange colored ones...ok once you pop off the fasteners heres the tricky part unlocking the fasteners on the inner part of the panel... the white colored ones...

I easiest way i was able to unlock the fasteners on the inner side was by inching my hand inward working it in slowly.... sure enough the fasteners came out and i didnt break anything....

http://www.the370z.com/members/simot...poiler-017.jpg

STEP 3

Now its time to put on the template that comes with the spoiler... this part is a no brainer just line up the template and tape it in place so it dont move... please align it properly its not my fault if u dont line it up correctly... if your template isnt lined up then your gonna have a hard time with lining up ur spoiler.... after your done taping it in place get a center punch and mark the center of the cross hairs on the paper... if you dont have a center punch like me lol use anything with a pointed tip. in my case... i used a fine pointed screwdriver... Now once youve marked all the centers of the holes remove the paper template and look and see if you have marked the center of the holes you are about to drill.... if everything is good then your ready to drill...

http://www.the370z.com/members/simot...poiler-021.jpg

http://www.the370z.com/members/simot...poiler-023.jpg

STEP 4

Before you go crazy drilling the hatch place a drop cloth on the inside so you dont get metal shavings all over the inside of your car.... i used a old bed sheet and it worked great i didnt have to vacuum after the install...

http://www.the370z.com/members/simot...poiler-020.jpg

ANyways ok you will need 3 drill bits.... a 1/8, a 9/32, and a 25/64 drill bit.... there is a total of ELEVEN holes that you will drill... start off with the 1/8 drill bit and drill out all the eleven holes this is your pilot hole drill please try to be very accurate when drilling... thats what the center punch marks are for so yah......

http://www.the370z.com/members/simot...poiler-025.jpg

now... there will be two rows.... the top and the bottom on the top row you will drill the first hole with the 9/32 the hole that is second you will drill with the 25/64 then the next three holes are once again 9/32 drill bit then the 25/64 and the last hole on the top row is a 9/32 the second row are all 25/64 to be drilled

http://www.the370z.com/members/simot...poiler-029.jpg

When your done... rust proof the holes.... i added silicone in my holes and then jammed in the plactic grommets that came with the spoiler... now the grommets are only for the holes u drilled 9/32 the tab looking plastic thing is is for the second row on the outer side... please dont flip the tabs there is a left and a right.. the hump on the tab should be facing up NOT DOWN!!!

STEP 5

Your almost done ok now get the spoiler and assemble the under side install the fasteners given to you and and the stud looking thing... for this step i totally forgot to take a picture... im sorry but its pretty easy.... after youve installed everything needed on the under side of the spoiler.... remove the film from the double stick tape and slowly place it on your z DO NOT just press on it right away because the fasterners will lock in place sooo FIRST place it on ur z and line it up make sure its even THEN press on it and lock in the fasteners in place.... install the 2 bolts provided and the 2 nuts also....

http://www.the370z.com/members/simot...poiler-031.jpg

STEP 6

Make sure there is no gaps in the spoiler everything should be flush and the double stick tape should be all stick nothing should look like its about to peel off... now blow air in the inside panel to get the rest of the metal shaving out of ur car... if you dont have a compressor use a computer duster can you can buy that anywhere...... now put on your plastic panel back on... you are now complete...
MAKE SURE you do not wet your spoiler for at least 24 hours so the maximum adhesion of the double stick tape is achieved....

http://www.the370z.com/members/simot...poiler-036.jpg
I really love that butt... dam...

NOTES....

Please do not under estimate the difficulty of this install... its not an easy task... if you doubt your skills dont try it.... the last thing you want is eleven holes in your hatch that are DRILLED in the wrong areas and they DONT LINE UP... you would be definitely :shakes head:
it took me a total of 3-4 hours to complete this install and this was my first install of a spoiler for the 370z....
Most of all be safe while working on your car wear eye protection when drilling and always be carful....
And most of all HAVE fun while your doing this mod... i had a lot of fun putting this spoiler on.... ill make a DIY for the front spoiler tomoro cuz im to lazy and tired from the install...

Good write up. You can embed your gallery pictures in the post, just copy the [IMG] tag line that is at the bottom of each picture and paste it into the text.

i bought it from ebay from a dealer it was 550.... painted... but the dealer is not on ebay anymore...

zmyride 12-07-2009 11:26 PM

Huh? I believe the spoiler is glued on. Who in the world would drill holes into the rear trunk like that? Overtime the holes will rust and the screws will loosen and all you have then is a loose spoiler. how are you going to fix that?

The spoiler should come with glue kit, not screws.

Im a really nice guy but people like u irritate the f*ck outa me... acting like u know everything...... sooo before more people go on my thread and agree with me let me explain myself....alright man..... idk who u are but u busting in my thread not even knowing me and saying "who in the world would drill holes in my trunk" implying im stupid for doing this... ALRIGHT bro first of all the spoiler aint f*ucking glued on aight? its BOLTED on and held by fasteners that lock in place on the Z!!!! every z with a god damn wing has bolts and fasteners...... the only type of wings u freaking glue on are the cheap *** M3 wings u can buy on ebay.... the holes will NOT get loose because the the proper size holes were carefully drilled in preperation for the fasteners to go in.... and it wont leak or rust because ONE.... i put vast amounts of sealant in each HOLE and fastener to INSURE no leaking and TWO... like wat chris said it wont rust cuz its ALUMINUM bro.... one more thing there wont be anything to fix because it aint a taiwan spoiler that u glue on; its a GENUINE NISSAN wing which means every Z with the sports package wing was installed the same wayy i did it alright.... AND if u insist on glueing the wing on then GO AHEAD bro... if it flys off after a while and hits a car behind u... ull just feel like a jackass cuz u know was right... :tiphat:

GT Motoring 12-08-2009 11:46 AM

Looks good and nice write up but wow that is a lot of holes. They didn't want that thing going anywhere!

Billy830 03-31-2010 05:16 PM

That would be some kind of glue that would hold that wing on with the down forces created at very high speeds. If anyone knows of that kind of glue let me know.

wow man... that sucks.. ummm are you sure your dealer gave you a genuine spoiler from nissan or a replica... it should come with a template.... the only way i could think of getting a template is contacting one of the dealers on this forum and then getting it from them

yes its genuine with nissan packiging and part # sticker on the package ,
the thing is the car is just released in my region , thats why spare parts aren't available in much quantity:S

this is what im arguing with them about, to look for another package to see if it contains a template. the funny thing is that it seems they dont have another spoiler :) (another meaning of saying my dealer sucks)

any help is appreciated

peace

Thanks for this write up. Where did you purchase your spoiler from? I just ordered mine from Courtesy Parts but it didn't include the template or the replacement gas shocks. Unfortunately they are unable to provide the template. They claim that the spoilers provided by the dealers don't come with templates because they are meant to act as replacement parts for vehicles that already had a spoiler installed. Lame.

Were any of you able to track down a template somewhere else? Thanks!

If you have a second, would you be able to take a look at the replacement hatch struts that came with your spoiler and send me the name of the manufacturer on it and model #?

I'm trying to figure out if I can avoid replacing mine, or if I can find cheaper versions somewhere else since my spoiler didn't come with replacement struts!

Thanks so much!!!

Sim...from one island braddah to another MAD PROPS and Alohas to your DIY, I read this entire thread just because its good info, when douche bags reply to me with silly comments such as "its glue on" I dont even bother or give them the time, just not worth the energy you know, anyway awesome write up, damn it I have still yet to see a Red 370Z on the island, saw my first pearl white one today....bought it and made the dealership throw in the factory spoiler, (as well as a whole bunch of goodies I like) just waiting for it to come it:tiphat::happydance:

simota1 11-21-2010 03:31 AM

Good write up Simota, Very informative. Purchased and installed my spoiler this weekend. BTW The response to the ignorant fool that thinks the spoiler is "glued on" is a classic, always cracks me up when i read it, lol.

First of all, awesome write-up!

Has anybody ever dropped a screw while trying to screw on the spoiler? What to do now :( it's stuck inside the trunk.

simota1 01-02-2012 08:03 PM

try maybe a magnet?

GaleForce 01-02-2012 08:03 PM

Maybe you could use a flexible magnetic pick-up tool? something like this? Amazon.com: Ullman HT-2FL Flex Magnetic Pick Up Tool, overall length 29 inches: Industrial & Scientific

Yep, I did this too. I purchased a magnetic pickup tool from O'Reilly's. It only took three attempts to fish out the nut.

Thanks for the DIY, simota1. I referred to this thread a few times during the install.
