DIY: Triple Gauge Cluster

8 Attachment(s)
This seemed to have little info on EXACTLY how the hoods and bezels were held on... so... here.

Once you get em off, it's up to you how you get the one piece triple gauge backplane out. I will probably just cut it out since I'm throwing it away..

First off... 'how the hell are they on there'?...

the hood has a notch towards the front

Attachment 42339

that notch clips over this post on the gauge face

Attachment 42341

'can i pull the bezel off first'?

No.

the hood has a plastic rim

Attachment 42342

that slides into a notch in the bezel

Attachment 42343

finally... 'how the hell do i get it off'?

you need to basically get a hook or some type of puller under the hood and pry it over the tab.

the rear is a simple clip tab that pulls up easily.

Attachment 42344

hold the rear up while you slide your puller under the hood and up towards the front.

Attachment 42348

you will want to line it up with the tab you are trying to get over.

Attachment 42346

make sure you get in-between the hood and the big flap that is attached to the bezel. then pull out and pry up with your hand.

Attachment 42347

you do have to pull out pretty hard to get it over the tab

once the hood is off its easy to see that the bezel is clipped to the gauge with the tabs... the top 2 are easy to get at. you kind of have to push the bezel down and tilt the gauge back to release the tab at the bottom.

try not to scratch up your dash or window.

Nice DIY! Now I want gauges :)

I might as well finish it off.

I just took a pair of needle nose pliers and busted out the backplane.

Ordered ProSport Premium 60mm gauges. They are pretty shallow.

Ground the tabs off of the silver part of the bezel.

Attachment 42490

Then ground most of the bezel base away so the the whole gauge fit through.

Attachment 42491

Attachment 42492

Removed the "leather" hood from the plastic hood base.

Epoxied the silver ring back to the bezel.

Attachment 42555

I just siliconed the finished bezel to the gauge face in case I want to swap.

Wired up the plugs.

OEM black wire - ground
OEM purple wire - constant
OEM orange wire - switched

Ran the sensor wires through the huge grommet on the passenger side behind the battery.

Then I needed a way to hold the hood to the gauge... here's what i came up with using parts from the junk drawer.. your solution may be better.. i hope.

Attachment 42556

yup.. just a hose clamp.

now to get it in the dash...

i just bent and cut the bracket that came with the gauge..

Attachment 42557

and took a screw, lock washer and nut from the junk drawer, drilled a hole in the hood and used it to sandwich the dash.

Attachment 42558

Attachment 42559

Then I just took some double-stick and put the hood covers back on.

Attachment 42560

not sure about these 'black out' gauges that everyone sells... with the top down on the car you can't read them at all.

I wired up a mini-toggle switch so I can flip between the 'amber' and 'white' LED colors to see if that will help in sun light.

Attachment 42561

oh... keep the hoods numbered or something... they are all slightly different.

If can replace that useless clock with an oil pressure gauge without removing the dash I'm totally in.

A nice analog clock, sort of like the 240Z, would be nice.

you gotta do all 3 or nothing.

3zworld 03-10-2012 01:25 AM

Well, if you have a oil pressure sensor already outputting that data could you not configure an UltraGuage to read/display that info ?

Who knows what voltage range the OEM sensor is putting out.

As far as I have been able to tell the 370z has a switch not a sensor so a sensor would need to be added.

Looks great. What gauges did you go with?

Not sure I like them though. You can't see anything thru the dark glass during the day.

Not sure you can find anything that is as shallow.

stratburst 03-11-2012 10:29 AM

Why did you opt for the 60mm and not the 52mm? Based on the install you did do you think the 52mm gauges would install w/o having to modify the bezel?

They might. I just liked the bigger size.

the senders...

first, i did the water temp.. since i could actually find the pieces locally at a Fastenall (they don't stock any british threads)

bought a 1/8" NPT all female T... 2 NPT male hose barbs.

cut the hose on the longest TB coolant and just put some hose clamps on the barbs.

Attachment 42725

for the oil pressure sender, i ordered from McMasters... 1/8" NPT to BSPT nipple... 1/8" NTP male x BSPP female fitting.. to go with an extra 1/8" NPT female T that I got from Fastenall.

Attachment 42772

The OEM oil temp sender is actually M12x1.25 (this car makes no sense)... I was going to just tap the pan, but then found some places that sell our oil drain plug (same size btw M12x1.25) that is already tapped with 1/8" NPT.

You have had this done for a while, any issues at all? Rattles ect...

Also, can you use the buttons on the front of the gauges without them moving? Pretty secure in there?

*Edit* Did this install and I am very happy with how it turned out. No rattles ect.

Bad picture, but you get the idea

martin82 05-22-2012 02:41 AM

how easy was the removal of the dash?

Boost_lee 05-22-2012 03:43 AM

Jmac, are those 60mm or 52mm?

You don't removed the dash, you cut out the factory gauges. If your going this route, you never intend on putting the factory ones back it.

These are 52mm. They worked perfectly with the factory ring, and I did not have to shave off any tabs which i found increased stability. If your going to do it that way, make sure to prefit everything first. The tabs/caps only line up a certain way.

Mr.Squeeze 05-29-2012 12:39 PM

Good Job on installing the gauges ,I have 52mm Defi gauges that I am doing now I removed the dash though. I wish I would have found this thread, I like the way you used the hose clamp and bracket.

I will be doing the same thing

I am going to test out a new bracket this weekend. I'll let you know how it works out, but it should hold the gauges in there a lot tighter. I like tight...

chknhawk 06-21-2012 03:22 PM

Sorry if I am late on all these posts.. lol.. Anyway, the gauge cluster bracket should only be one or two bolts just behind the cubby (or nav screen in your case). I was working on my stereo and saw the bolt holding the cluster in place. Hope this might help.

kellyefields 06-21-2012 04:29 PM

you have to remove the entire dash to get the guage cluster out due to a bolt that is impossible to get to otherwise. You can cut it out but considering it only took about an hour to remove the entire dash going slow i wanted to ensure a proper installation. I could remove the dash in about 30 min now no problem. I went with the 52mm guages so the stock ring will fit over them. 60 you will have to do some cutting and such. IMHO the best way is to remove the dash.

Does anyone know the part number for this silver bezel piece?
Are all three the same part number or different?

the part number is 68236 they are about 20 buck from what I can tell. if you use 60mm guages you will have to grind those off and then attach to the new guages. if you use 52 mm guages the tabs will slide over them and then you can glue them using the tabs as a guide/gluing location.

Dude, those guages are soooo sick. But man, this looks like its a total pain in the azz to do. Damn

martin82 11-24-2012 07:49 AM

Where can I tap into for rpm signal wire my datalogger (iq3) needs signal.... Thanks!

Maddog483 03-02-2013 08:19 PM

hmmm looks like i will be getting 2 more guages and doing this at a later date
got a boost gauge to go with the GTM SC install but if i am gonna bother sounds like i should do all three.

awesome info gang exactly what i wanted to know!!

Mitco39 03-02-2013 09:48 PM

Here is a link to my gauge install, used a very similar method to this DIY and changed a few things as I went.

JMac88 03-02-2013 10:39 PM

very similar to the way I installed mine, i used a long piece of aluminum, drilled 3 holes and jb welded the lock nuts on. I find the fact that all 3 gauges are on the one long piece locks them all in place well

Cell 06-29-2013 03:34 PM

What kind of hook did you guys use to get the gauges out?

Am I reading this correctly...the gauge clusters are 60mm and not 62mm. So the GReddy Multi D/A Gauges (62mm) won't fit? GReddy

You will be hard pressed to fit a 62mm gauge in the factory location. Depending on the depth of the gauge it could be done but will need extensive modifications. You also will lose the silver trim ring.

My gauges are 52mm and they were a tight fit.

Hm, damn. Thanks.

I really want multi gauges. More looking for me!
