Warning this mod is not for the light hearted it requires some grinding on the shifter housing & console piece.
Some of the pics aren't the best but for those of you able to do this can easily fill in the blanks. http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...3/IMG_0125.jpg After removing the silver cover you will see 4 clips that hold on the PRND plastic cover. http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...3/IMG_0126.jpg Here are the ones in the front. http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...3/IMG_0127.jpgAfter unclipping it just pull the black cover straight up and remove it. http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...3/IMG_0128.jpg You will see the little light with a bulb in it just pull it out and store it for later. http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...3/IMG_0130.jpg Here is where is gets tricky disassemble the shift boot and take the bottom piece and try to fit it over and you will see where it hits this is where you have to grind on the shifter housing. http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...3/IMG_0131.jpg You must also cut the bottom piece to fit(TRIM IT SLOWLY). http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...3/IMG_0132.jpgThis is a little knob sticking off to the side just cut it off. http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...3/IMG_0133.jpgTake your time once all 3 pieces fit (the bottom to the console, the middle leather piece, and the silver trim ring)then just reassemble the boot assembly and install. |

That looks good. Nicely done.

Great mod - looks so much better. Question, how is the shift boot held or affixed to the shift lever under the knob? Does the top of the boot attach under the shift knob somehow? Also, in the photos it looks like method simply places the new shift boot over the P/D/N/R plate- Is this correct?

and, yes, with my method you leave the circular plate, as it wedges the boot in place |
Cool - Thanks for the info!

I ordered a aftermarket chrome shift knob which will be in next week so I will post pics of my 6sp conversion when I'm done.

If anyone is in the process of doing this mod, can you post the dimensions of the shift boot? Height, diameter at bottom, diameter at the top and the overall length? Thinking of finding an aftermarket Alcantara boot and using that.

Do any of the MOMO knobs fit our cars - has anyone used one? First auto in awhile and I forgot what a pain it is to find/switch shift knobs.

Somatic, I just got my boot in today, and was installing it... I noticed when you go to downshift in M mode the plastic retainer ring on the shifter likes to get in that crevice of the faceplate and prevent you from pulling the shifter all the way back... Were you able to find a fix for this?
Only thing I can think of is remove it? :ugh2: Or maybe trim some of the shifter knobs bezel of the base?? Edit: Just re-read the OP, so now we just use the Manual's baseplate instead of the Auto?? Hmmm.... :icon08: Did he re-install the PRND plate or no? |

Ok, so I'm trying to get the manual cover to fit, and the boot is taken care of by the manual underpiece. But the underpiece won't fit over the whole shifter assembly, and I'm not too fond of cutting the whole shifter assembly apart, so I'm in the process of trying to modify the underpiece to accommodate the shifter assembly. To be continued... I don't know exactly what he cut to make it work since the pictures aren't very descriptive but I'm piecing it together as I go what I need to cut. Once it's all done, I'll take pics of the finished parts. Also, lol I'm doing this without a dremmel. So yeah, birthday coming up soon, I know what I'm asking for. :rofl2: For those who are thinking about this, get a dremmel first, you will save a LOT of asspain. :icon17: |

The best thing about my way is when you shift it is silky smooth. |

But no worry on the blurry pics that part was fine, just couldn't really tell what was/wasn't cut. So far, I've had to trim down the front side of the shifter assembly almost clean off, cut a square section of the trim underpiece, and still have to trim more apparently. :shakes head: This just goes to show the 7AT interior design team and the 6MT interior design team never once talked to eachother about making parts fit both = less parts to make = more $$ saved. :ugh2: |

Did you have a dremmel I'm guessing? I'm seriously considering just going and getting one tomorrow. This is really irritating having to use a mini hack saw. :rofl2: |

Just so you know you don't have to cut all the way through the shifter housing just need to cut a groove ,there is nothing electrical in the way. |

Ok, I'm trying to do more from the trim piece more than the housing, but they are not cooperating. |

The only thing I can see it hitting now is a small white... button of some sort on the left side of the shifter. I have no idea what it does, or how to remove it so I can't cut it. Therefore I have to cut the trim piece which I was hoping to not have to do. I've had it, I'm buying that dremel tomorrow. You watch after I get that though it's only going to take 15 mins and bam I'm done. Although I am noticing the whole console trim piece when in place, doesn't want to sit all the way down. I'm wondering if it won't sit flush once it's mounted. |
lol go my monkeys go !!!!

But I've decided to call it quits for the night and start again tomorrow when there's more daylight. I'll go to Ace and get the dremel set cause with my file it's just taking too long to trim this piece down. :shakes head: |
