DIY: Shifter Boot fix with after market shift knob
When I installed my TWM shift knob I noticed that the ring that was in the boot from the factory was too big.
So I set out to find a solution. I didn't have to look far as I had a 2 liter bottle of soda sitting on the counter. Step one. Cut the soda bottle along the red lines that I have here: http://www.the370z.com/members/dembf...3-cut-here.jpg That will leave you with this piece: http://www.the370z.com/members/dembf...7-new-ring.jpg Then take your boot and cut the zip tie holding the factory ring in place: http://www.the370z.com/members/dembf...ctory-ring.jpg Zip tie the smaller ring in place: http://www.the370z.com/members/dembf...ring-place.jpg And there you go. You now have a better fit for the shift boot. http://www.the370z.com/members/dembf...ure30426-a.jpg |
Thats some serious outside the box thinking. Excellent write up!

I did a similar thing with a 69 cent grommet in my shift knob rattle fix thread.
But you found an even cheaper solution to a similar problem. Nice job:tup: |

And it appealed to my frugal side. |
Well done!

Very slick. Quick question - it looks like the TWM knobs come with some spacers, jam nuts, etc. I'd prefer the shift knob at the stock height or lower. Did you use the jam nut only? Thanks!

I'm not sure how this fix would work if you had the shifter at the stock height. When I tighten the shift knob down now it snugs down to the boot and holds it in place. |
So I bought a torch blue shifter ball, when I screw it in there is a 1in or so gap between the ball and boot. Would this soulution also fix a shifter ball problem?

Or you could add a second one below the other as a spacer. Or a combination of both. |

I know this is a real old thread but this gave me an idea that worked with my flossy nub nub shift knob.
-stock knob is 220.5 grams -flossy nub nub shift knob is 346 grams and sits about 1/2 lower comes with nothing to secure the boot to the knob to I basically had to make a different/longer version of what dembflyr did. almost the same except I also used a shift boot collar and the cap if the soda bottle. I cut the entire top off with the cap (that has a small hole cut into the top of the cap) so I can twist the cap out to create an adjustable spacer. a small hole in the cap so that u can twist it out or in to make sit lower higher on the shifter because it slants out wider as it goes lower. then superglue once u get the perfect hight needed to push boot up to the bottom of the knob. then glue on the soda cap and collar also I put a little electric tape for appearance http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/21/venumysy.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/21/sa8ynyvy.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/21/yju8utaj.jpg now push it through the boot then zip tie tighthttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/21/amu6e3u4.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/21/y9erasyp.jpg reinstall back in car and around shifter http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/21/a5ysy9ed.jpg lastly a dab of blue loctite for me since my shift knob has engraving on top I wanted to be centered and level to read and screw on shifter until snug and again for me level writing http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/21/ubebedy4.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/21/zyta9egy.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/21/hehahy8a.jpg Anyway thats what i did at 2am cuz i cant sleep but I'm happy with it and I personally like this little weighted shift knob customer service from flossy was a in a nice way sh*t along with it being the wrong threading (10x1.5), nothing a threading die can't take care of tho. |
