DIY: AT Shift knob removal/replacement
A few members were wondering how to remove the stock shift knob so I thought I'd make a quick DIY.
Tools Needed: Your hands for removal, and whatever your new knob takes to put on. (My new knob came with a tiny allen wrench) I bought this Momo knob from some Infiniti dealer on ebay for like 90 bucks. http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...m/DSCF8913.jpg First grab the sliver collar on the bottom of the stock knob and pull down, mine didn't take too much force to break loose. http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...m/DSCF8914.jpg Next pull out the wire pin that was covered by the silver collar and pull up on the knob to remove it. http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...m/DSCF8916.jpg The next steps will vary depending on the kind of knob you buy, but I'll show how I put mine on. It turned out to be quite easy. The new knob came with a collar to cover the screws that it uses to hold it on, so slide that on first, then put the knob on. http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...m/DSCF8912.jpg One thing to note is that there is a bit of "play" in the white part that pushes down inside the shaft. If you don't seat the new knob down far enough you'll need to push it like an inch to shift, but if it's too far down it will give you a message on the dash cluster saying shift into park even though you are in park. You need to find the sweet spot. The last step is to tighten the three small screws at the bottom of the knob trying to tighten them evenly, then screw the collar in to cover the anchor screws. http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...m/DSCF8909.jpg That's it. The new knob doesn't sit any higher than the stock knob. I wish it was a bit lower, and I even considered shaving down the white button part a bit to lower it. In the end I didn't want to screw anything up so I kept it as is. I've had this knob on for probably about 10k miles with no issues whatsoever:tup:. |
Thanks for the write up!

Awesome write up! +rep

Thanks for the writeup, more +rep for you!

Can you take another pic a bit further away with the rest of the interior in view? Trying to see what this would look like in relation to everything else.

all we need is a shift boot
|
I'd really like a lower shifter. Shaving down that plastic part seems like an option, but I'd really like an option that was reversible.
So that Momo shifter was listed as a G37 Compatible one, correct? We need to see what other ones also work with the G37. I'd like some other options. |

A well deserved Monster Rep. I also created a tag for others to find. |
i want a realy short shift lever like on the ferrari http://www.thecarspy.net/images/19355ALP.jpg
|
Not my style, but something shorter would be cool. GT-R would be nice.

Some pictures from a distance

Cool, thanks a lot. Personally I think I'm going to hold out for a shorter option, although I realize some modification might be needed for that to happen.

nice write up!!

i think the stock knob would look good a little lower

Will do although having zero luck getting hold of an RSW CF gate cover - doesn't seem like you can order off the english bit of their website, although the Jap side works.
Will probably change the knob at the same time, so it's on hold until I get the RSW ordered! |
hmm nice job looks like a girly knob tho :)
|
Anybody try installing the R35 knob?
|
GTR shift know is taken off the same way(looks easier tho) as ours.
YouTube - 2009+ Nissan GTR Shift Knob Removal.... NOW... TO FIND A PLACE THAT IS SELLING THE OEM GTR R35 SHIFT KNOB!!! (this would be so sexy) |
Damn that does look like it would work. I wonder if the shaft size is the same ?
349 Auto Transmission Control Device :: Power Train :: Genuine Nissan Parts :: GTR Parts (R35) 2009-2010 :: Nissan Parts, NISMO and Nissan Accessories - Courtesyparts.com http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/406/r353491.gif Looks like we would need these 3 parts 34910/$205 - 34922/$2 - 34929/$25. We maybe able to get them cheaper this is just what i found real quick. |
I wish I could just walk into a Nissan dealer ship and pocket one from a GTR, while their not looking :D ahaha jk.
uhm. group buy? |
Sounds like a good idea, someone contact Lou.....the panda man
Nissan 370Z Forum - View Profile: FuszNissan It would nice to know if the shaft diameter was the same and how high the gtr knob would sit in our cars. Does anyone have a friend with a gtr to give this a test fit first ? |
Alright. So looking around for many hours now.. the best place to buy, is still
349 Auto Transmission Control Device :: Power Train :: Genuine Nissan Parts :: GTR Parts (R35) 2009-2010 :: Nissan Parts, NISMO and Nissan Accessories - Courtesyparts.com But after carefully looking at this picture.. http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/s...om/gtrpush.png I would think it's best that we buy a RHD R35 shift knob. This would mean that the labels on the shift knobs would be accurate to us LHD 370z 7AT owners. |
I think the japanese and us versions are the same. That's how it was for the 350z automatic. I'm guessing because the gtr isn't a big seller nissan didn't change the automatic for the us market.

I'd like to revive this thread - the stock 7at shift knob is not complimentary to the rest of the car. Has anyone managed to install the GTR shift knob?
|
bump
|
Has anyone tired to cut down the "white part" nub to lower the shifter? I like the Momo version, but think it sits too high. Thanks!
|
You cannot cut down the white plastic part by itself (like you could in the 350z); there is a metal shaft that is inside and it would need to be cut as well.
|
So no on the GTR?
|
anyone know of any other knobs that for sure work?

A few questions: 1. How thick is the inside shaft? How hard would it be to cleanly trim? I 2. s it just a push down actuator? or is there wiring inside? 3. Would it be possible to chop off a good inch without compromising its ability to operate properly? :tiphat: As to the GT-R knob, either a cf overlay or perhaps having the button polished smooth (assuming the chrome wouldn't flake off) should work. |
