i think the consensus is that those things are pretty much nothing more than a conversation piece.

magnetic plugs for gears are sort of effective.

Yeah gears wear the synchros since they're brass moreso than the gears under normal usage.

IMNSHO, for a DD, a magnetic drain plug is not needed on an engine in good shape - the filter should catch any particles big enough to do any damage, bearings (the biggest wear item) are made from non-magnetic materials, frequent oil changes will keep the system clean, &c, &c, &c.

But a magnetic plug doesn't do any harm. If it makes you sleep better at night, install one.

YMMV

I agree that having a magnetic drain plug probably doesn't provide any additional protection if you are performing proper maintenance i.e. doing regular oil changes, keeping your oil levels good and using a quality filter. That being said I have a magnetic plug (to help me sleep better at night) and I've found it serves an added purpose during oil changes that works great... it sticks to the oil pan instead of dropping into a hot tub of oil where you'd have to fish it out. Furthermore it saves you from trying to catch the plug when it falls and sticking your hand into a stream of hot oil. That part alone is worth the price of admission IMO.

Yep; i agree with x1070zx; my 11' has 56k on it & don't use one drop of oil between changes or does it make any rattling noises.....but i have a magnetic plug also-it's an indicator(more than anything) to let you know that your engine is getting some internal wear & moving some metal.
