I followed the instructions in the manual to a tee with one exception - keep pressing your hand held garage door opener button until your motor unit signals that it has memorized the code. There is a section in the manual that explains this for Canadian garage door openers. My Sears unit flashes it's lights when it has complted its coding. I had no problem linking my two garage doors. Hope this works out for you.

I had the same problem when I got my car. My issue was I have been through a lot of vehicles in a short amount of time and the garage door opener only hold a certain amount of codes. I had to clear the memory and reprogram all of the devices. Check your manual to see how many it holds, if you have had a lot of different remotes or homelinks programmed this could be the problem.

Or your just not running fast enough to hit the learn button and get back into the car, they only give you 30 seconds!

Please post a link to your model, and its receiver/transmitter (remote). Thanks.

I tried to program mine as well and found that it didn't take when I got home and tried it. I did notice though that the manual mentions that Canadian garage openers are require to have a rolling anti-intrusion system built in and must be programed at the door opener itself in Learn mode. I have yet to dig up my door opener manual and program it properly. I suspect your garage door has a rolling code if its only three years old....

Here's the deal and why I requested a link to his model or manual thereof...you first have to take a handheld remote and get your Z to recognize it—then Z now acts like the handheld remote, but it has to be recognized by the garage door opener to make the final sync. It's a two-step syncing process to get to a result.

So in otherwards the way you explain it, i have to first do the remote and homelink syncing, then after that, i have to press the learn button on the garage opener and then hit the homelink button 3 times?

Yes. However, on our units (which are made by Liftmaster) we had to simply press the correct button on the rear of the garage door opener and within a certain amount time also press the Homelink button in our Z. The garage door opener then includes your Z as another handheld remote it now recognizes.

Thanks for the pointer SoCal. I was gonna hold out and actually read the manual for the garage door opener. After reading this thread last night when I pulled out of the garage this morning I grabed a stool and looked at the garage door opener - haha its a Liftmaster and it says on the back press the learn button then press the new remote transmit button within 30 seconds. I had already programmed the controller into the Homelink but hadn't done the learn yet. Pressed the learn button and ran back to the car pushed the transmit then the light flashed in the garage and I was good to go. Took less time than it did to type this post

The radio frequency regulations in Canada are different than the U.S. Therefore, according to the owner's manual, I had to cycle my hand held door opener by pressing/releasing the button every one or two seconds until the door opener unit began flashing it's light confirming acceptance of the code. It only took a few seconds for it to work. This was the only difference in programming than the U.S. method. My door opener is a 2001 or 2002 Sears unit.

... and once you have the flashing light confirming that it's been programmed some garage door openers have a rolling code so you need to press the learn button on the garage door opener then hit the door opened in the car until the light flashes confirming it has been linked with the rolling code. SHould work after that....

Its possible you've used up all the remote memory slots available for your garage door opener and might need to dump the memory and reprogram just the ones you use now.
