Carbotech and backing plates
Do I need to install the backing plates on Carbotech pads?
|
You mean the shims between the pads and the pistons? If so, yes. The shims are heat insulators. Put a little bit of grease on the back of the pads to help keep the noise down. ;)

Well ****. I guess I need to put those back on now since I thought they were just noise shims. Someone needs to come up with some titanium backing plates like they have for Evo's.

I don't believe you NEED them, they do keep noise down and help insulate, but unless they start squeaking, I think you'll be fine

Actually, you do not need them. I've talked to Carbotech directly and they told me not to run a titanium shim. If you have any questions regarding their products, call the number on the side of the box, ask to speak to a tech. They are always very helpful.

I run titanium backing plates (1.0mm) in the front in conjunction with my XP10s on track. Works great. Yes I do get crazy noise if I use the brakes without a transfer layer on the rotors. Sounds like a train coming to a stop.

I run heat shields and they seem to be working out so far:

I've been running Ti heat shields for over 3 years with no issues.

I would rather run Ti heat shields and have that extra layer of heat reduction for the stock calipers, which are known to not like heat abuse at all.
