Default Factory Nav question

Does anyone know if it's possible to replace the factory nav screen with a touchscreen unit? I'm not expecting to get the Nav to work via touchscreen but I would like to add a car pc.

My guess is that the nav doesn't use a standard (VGA?) connection so I if I replace the factory screen then I won't be able to display anything other than the car pc.

I suppose another option would be to install a touch matrix in front of the nav display but how do I display the car pc on it?

Any advice much appreciated

If you replaced the screen nothing else would probably work or be able to connect to the screen. Everything is sort of integrated into that screen and its circuits. Your best bet is to but the aftermarket dash kit and install a new aftermarket radio. A touch matrix is not realy going to help you much it would be a ton of integrating and you would probably need someone who knew a lot about the boards and what the programing was in the nav system.

Not sure why yours isn't, but my nav is a touch screen from the dealer. It might be as simple as ordering the screen used in the 370z for the USA.

Sorry to cause confusion - I should have said that I am buying a UK 370Z but it will have the Nissan Sat Nav. I realize it may differ from the US version but it's so new in the UK I have nothing to go on lol!

Oh my bad lol I saw 350z in your status. But still you should have touch screen on the UK model hmm.

Not yet we don't - sad to say we lag behind you guys so we are on an old version. TBH, I would rather not have the nav and fit my own screen but I've got a deal I can't turn down!

I guess I could eventually fit a touch screen from either a US or future UK car but that still wouldn't allow me to integrate it with a car pc.

Yes, I am making things difficult!!!!

If I did talk with him I would have to kick him in the shin. I would poke him in the eye but he's taller than me!

(I'm not a fan BTW!)

He does have his moments that's for sure. I reckon I've seen him a bit too much now though.

Back on topic - I had an idea. This is all theory so feel free to tell me if this will not work:

If I identify the RGB (and sync) cables going into the factory screen then I should be able to wire those into a new screen.

If I can do this, then I just need to add a switchbox which allows me to select the factory input or the car pc. In car pc mode I will be able to use the touchscreen as normal.

This does require the RGB signal to be standard but I don't think they would make something bespoke just to be difficult do you?

All opinions appreciated

I've actually done a car PC project several years back in my Honda Civic. I've searched all of the best possible solutions out there and none of them have great sound quality as they tried to integrated the receiver and whatever else inside the headunit. I've found some on ebay, but one site i'd highly recommend to go check out stories on cartft.com

Hopefully this helps.....you might also want to look into a good power supply that won't do a hard shut down for 2 mins and then do a hard shut down once the time limit's up.

Wish you the best!

I do not think just rewring some cables will be that easy. Also you might short something out.

Yes that would be your choice for a car pc or carputer for a pc. But I do not believe they are worth the money nor are that easy to use. Get a nice kenwood 6140 or something like that upgrade your speakers and be done.

NavVideo makes plug and play units that allow you to use your factory nav screen with any input. Check out their site. They don't have anything listed for the Z but you may be able to talk with them and see if they have any insight. You may be able to send them some pics or something and they could tell you if it would work.
