No one is excited to see this in future Nissan models?

No, it puts up the chromecast home screen on the monitor ( mine is an aftermarket head unit). I have an iPhone and the hdmi connector does mirror my screen, but some apps won't show up like hbo go, but hbo go works with chromecast. |
Guys, CarPlay will be a choice, you'll still have the rest of the radio as it was before Apple/Google got in there. It's just an icon you press when connecting your iDevice via USB. Google is doing the same thing. Carplay and GoogleAndroidPlay - for lack of a better word - is coming on new cars only, anyone else is out of luck unless they have an aftermarket radio. Pioneer is retrofitting several radios with CarPlay as a firmware update.
|
Nissan's participation has been known since CarPlay was announced back in February, as I mentioned in my OP. Unfortunately, it doesn't help anyone here unless Nissan plans a firmware update. I would pay $150 in a heartbeat to get CarPlay retro'd on my 2014. Wouldn't even consider it for Nissan's extremely lame Navigation system map update.
|
I take it no add on device to the unit to provide AirPlay like an aftermarket device.
|
So if you take a video in motion device i.e naviks connect it to a media player run device of your cell as a hotspot you get movies and TV shows and more on the go in your ride.
|
So...although Nissan has technically signed on with Apple as one of the CarPlay implementers, there appears to be no impetus on their part to actually provide it as an option on their Nav-equipped vehicles. I can't blame them....it would mean that they might as well abandon their extremely lame "voice activation" system, and if you can use navigation apps on your iPhone or iPad, or similar apps on an Android, why would anyone use Nissan's extremely lame navigation system?

I went with the Pioneer 400NEX and Carplay. Haven't looked back.

Everything works great with CarPlay. Few glitches every now and then. That's to be expected with such new software. Id definitely buy again if I had too. |

Cool cool, that sounds good, thanks! I am def doing some research on it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Did you have the factory nav+Bose system
Just wondering since I have the touch screen above Cd controls in the middle and then the ac and heating controls below |

Thanks!! How do you like it? I was reading that with the iPhone it has to be plugged in to use CarPlay. But i don't even see anywhere to plug it in in the pictures. Also does it already come with navi or does it have to be paid for separately? Although I did also read that the phones navi works nicely too when connected... and how is the Bluetooth quality for you? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Yep, to use CarPlay it has to be plugged in via USB. The guys who installed it for me added some USB ports in the center console.
http://www.plan-nine.org/console.jpg Several of the Pioneer units come with built-in nav (depends on which model you get), which is actually pretty good. CarPlay nav is good, and useful because you can pull locations from text messages and emails which is really helpful. You can't pinch-zoom on the CarPlay interface though, which sucks. Bluetooth quality is ok, the Pioneer unit sometimes has connection issues which can be resolved by switching to another input (like Sirius) then back to Bluetooth to get it to sync the music library. The CarPlay interface is much nicer for music as it has a far superior layout. Hoping they add more apps for CarPlay, would love to see Waze support. |

The only units worth considering are 4000NEX or 8000NEX IMO. 4000NEX and 8000NEX have the same 7" screen and HU features. The only difference between the two is that the 8000NEX is a capacitive touch screen (glossy) and it comes pre-loaded with NAV on the HD. 4000NEX uses a resistive touch screen (matte). I personally preferred the resistive screen for the matte finish. I found the capacitive was too reflective for my taste. Colors are slightly better on the 8000NEX with the screen but I took that as a trade off. FL sun is constant, lol. I also decided with CarPlay the pre-installed NAV maps wasn't a deciding factor. You will notice that Pioneer doesn't even allow you to compare the 4000NEX against the other models in the NEX line because spec for spec the 4000NEX is so close to the top model. You honestly cannot go wrong with either. Pioneer NAV has never done me wrong. You will notice that Pioneer is releasing "new" NEX models. ie. 4100NEX and 8100NEX. The "100" just means it has CarPlay pre-installed on the HU. The 4000NEX (I can only assume the same for the 8000NEX) required a firmware update. Literally takes a $5 2 GB SD card and you download the firmware from your computer and plug it into the HU. Takes *maybe* 10mins from start to finish. 20 mins if you include the trip to the store, lol. Super easy, save the move and get "last years" 4000/8000 model. Bluetooth is ok with the windows up. No one complains that I sound distant or hard to hear. This is with full HKS exhaust :driving: . Maps is great because you can pull up previously text'd addresses or use your phone as the interface to your HU. So no more typing on the screen. Pull up your phone/or use Siri to get directions. Same goes for Music/iHeartRadio/etc. Honestly, Im very impressed with the "beta" CarPlay. I paid about $500 shipped for mine. Not sure what work you'll need to additional to make it work if you have Bose Nav/Audio. I know those can be a PITA. Hopefully this helps some. :tiphat: |

Thats a GREAT clean install! I wish I ran both USB cables up thru the console. I did the HDMI and USB#1. I like how it sits flush. May have to make a similar adapter. Do you know what he used? |

Side note, I went with this back-up cam (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Cannot beat it for OEM look at $15 shipped with Prime. Very good day images. Little image noise at night but does the job. I went and replaced license plate lights with LEDs and that improved image quality. |
I went in to a shop this morning to look and they didn't have the NEX 4000 but they had the 4100. But they said that CarPlay won't support my IPhone since i have iOS 8. I was surprised. He couldn't guarantee that it would work if I were to try and use my IPhone's Maps

CarPlay wasn't even released until iOS8 was out if I am not mistaken. As I stated before, I experience rare glitches where the CarPlay freezes and kicks me out to the Pioneer main screen. In 3 weeks of ownership its happened twice. |

Man that's what I thought! It didn't sound like there were any problems on here with CarPlay working. His price was $650 for the 4100. I said I would get it from Amazon when I wanted, but he said he would price match lol. I checked though and as far as I could tell the cheapest 4100 on Amazon was $654. But yeah I only went to that place because it seriously had the best yelp reviews in the area. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Guys what about the 201 0 370z that has nav+ Bose? The heat/ ac controls are below the Cd player. I've looked all over but dont see an after market dash kit. If I wanted to add an after market player like NEX 4000!
|
i got the 4000NEX as well...works OK. Bad thing is there hasn't been any new apps released from Apple. Not even a firm ware update yet from Pioneer since 10-2014.
|
370JT did you have the nav - Bose system prior

base radio.

Hey yeah hey did mention that for sure, but at the same time he was pretty sure there might be some display problems if I tried to use my apple maps as well, he couldn't tell me for sure that it would work since I have iOS 8. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Ok cool man thanks for all your input with this! I really appreciate it. I'm gonna look back into it on my next day off haha Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I had the 8000NEX in my old car, and then transferred it myself into my 370 as soon as all the parts had come in. I originally bought this head unit for the CarPlay feature, but ever since the upgrade, I have barely used it. The 8000NEX is a really awesome head unit, and it does many things better in its native UI than CarPlay. The navigation, for one, is SOOOO much better than Apple's maps.

factory navigation has just about always seemed like a big rip since at least the Pioneer AVIC's hit. I knew that going in, of course, but would have hoped the Nismo Tech would have been more GTR multi-function display with more performance parameters than just multi-media and nav that it is. Include Navigation to be complete perhaps for those who don't have smartphones or whatever, but going forward, should be an option to mirror the phone display & use Google or Waze or if some poor fool is feeling brave, Apple Maps. :D
XM is right up there on the rip/sub model. Rear visibility is so limited that even without laws requiring it, backup cameras should've be standard on all but the basic trim anyway. The biggest disappointment is that it's the last gen system instead of one of the NissanConnect things that would let you use some mobile functionality/app support. Regular Nismo 6MT are much fewer and farther in between than the Nismo Tech which tells you how the margins are and where they're getting their money. As far as Apple, I much prefer Android though will go to something else if it should better. Nissan should stay agnostic and set to a standard (MirrorLink for example) that is not just Android. Apple has a contempt for their mobile user base they used to not have for their computer buyers but I am not fond of Siri. What they do tends to work well but only within the rather narrow scope of what they intend you to do. There is jailbreak, of course... |
NissanConnect is a joke, Nissan Navigation is a joke. The greenest intern at Apple could have designed both product interfaces better.
The vast majority of car buyers have ZERO interest in aftermarket stereo. Support for CarPlay and the Android equivalent was Nissan's best chance to bring functional electronics to the cockpit in an OEM product and they booted it. Ridiculous. |
