Default Pioneer X5500BHS and XM SXV200V1 Issue

Hey guys,

So I installed the XM SXV200V1 tuner on my Pioneer X5500 head unit this weekend, and I put the antenna on the dash like I have seen many people do. I am getting less than stellar reception and was wondering if there are any tricks or spots I can put the antenna to improve my signal. As it stands, i get signal loss from even driving under a tree.

Thanks for the help

Only thing I can think of is try relocating the antenna. Maybe stick it on the glass behind the rearview mirror.

I have mine mounted right above the back window on the outside of the car. Never have any issues with reception. It has a very strong magnet so it stays put.

Are you sure you have the wires in the correct location?
When hubby and I installed my new Pioneer HU we messed that up first round. Had to pull the thing out and redo some stuff.
I know your antenna thing is different than that but it never hurts to make sure-right?

Also-you should ping Bigaudiofanatic, this is right up his alley

I know I have seen/heard this issue a few times. The antenna for XM needs to be a piece of metal and not just laying on the dash. If your head unit came with a small metal square one side adhesive one side black this is where the antenna needs to go. 2 other options are let is stick to a piece of metal in the trunk, or on the outside of your car.

Thanks for the input guys. I fabbed up a small steel plate and put that under the antenna and its much better, but still not perfect. If it starts to bother me again, ill just have to bite the bullet and route it all the way to the roof.

Satellite radio/GPS is based on line of sight. Going in a tunnel, under trees will cause you to loose reception. New technology out there can actually use signal reflected off of building but I haven't seen it in sat radio yet. With my 350z, I had it mounted under the plastic covering of the shock tower brace in the back, plastic doesn't interfere with that frequency. Its all about the sensitivity of the detector. If that is your only issue (losing reception under trees), you're placement is fine just have older technology.
