Sub Boxes?

anyone think of these for the 370z? i'm thinking these with 8" focal utopia Subs http://www.350z-tech.com/forums/atta...-gallery-3.jpg be pretty legit i think

tommyguns 09-16-2012 09:42 PM

Thats the best looking setup I've yet to see. Damm I wish you would have posted this a litte sooner. I just finished glazing and spot putty today on my build. May have to sell it and start again!

bigaudiofanat 09-16-2012 10:24 PM

You really do not have the space in the 370z like you did in the 350 your showing in that picture. Your alternative would be the 2 areas located behind the sets. They can be built up to hold speakers or subs.

YoungZ 09-16-2012 11:03 PM

so .75cu/ft boxes wouldn't fit in that space even if i got creative with woofer placement? i wanna preserve as much hatch space as possible. i know its a 350 in the pic was just wondering if the room was there

YoungZ 09-16-2012 11:08 PM

im also thinking of cutting the plastic under the bar to create more space. my amp (Alpine PDX-F6) is gunna be behind the driver's seat i'm going with morel Supremo Components in the doors.

tommyguns 09-17-2012 12:06 AM

I'm going to take a close look at this tomorrow, I was just looking at a picture of that area and I think it could be done, matter of fact I'm sure of it. We'll see in the morning.

YoungZ 09-17-2012 01:49 AM

thanks man! i'd love to hear your input!

My_third_Z 09-17-2012 02:24 AM

As someone who just finished installing his stuff, I can tell you the area is cramped back there. And I inverted my subs.

Boost_lee 09-17-2012 02:36 AM

Just for reference, these are the 8's that I run in my car

Yep like I suggested good looking.

OP having dissembled a complete interior I do not think you will have enough room to go around the strut bar. If you are trying to save space go with a stealth sub under the floor.

tommyguns 09-17-2012 11:00 AM

Well after taking a good look at this, I have decided that I will be selling my current project and will be going this route. I'm going to make one side today and see how it looks.

It's started! The second coat of paint hasn't even dried on my other enclosure.....

tommyguns 09-17-2012 01:59 PM

Just ordered 2 Morel Primo 804 subs.

YoungZ 09-17-2012 04:46 PM

looks awesome! cant wait to see how this turns out! i may be investing in some fiberglass fairly soon! Scrapped the idea of Focal subs and i think i will be going with Image Dynamics ID8 subs and an Alpine PDX-F6 Amp to run everything.

tommyguns 09-17-2012 05:44 PM

Both are great choices! I'm almost contemplating changing the crossovers to 3way, going mid bass with the new enclosures and keeping the corner unit with the JL 10W3V2. If not it will go up for $525.00 plus shipping.

YoungZ 09-18-2012 01:40 PM

how big do you figure those boxes are gunna be? i need about .35Cu/ft each for the Image dynamics subs

tommyguns 09-18-2012 02:02 PM

In a rain delay today. Should be able to give you a better answer tomorrow. Speakers wont be here till Monday :shakes head:

YoungZ 09-18-2012 02:25 PM

Alright looking forward to it!

So you peaked my curiosity and I just had to go out and do some work. I pulled the form out and made the rings. I laid in the ring and it looks like it's going to be about at it's deepest point 14''L X 9"W X 12"H. Here's where you come in, I need you to convert this to cubic feet for me  . Now keep in mind depending where you decide to trim the form, you can add and decrease the volume.

Stapel65 09-18-2012 07:48 PM

I get 0.875 cubic feet (14x9x12)/1,728

Considering an audio upgrade so let me know how this turns out

tommyguns 09-18-2012 08:00 PM

Thanks for the info. Now we all have to keep in mind that there are odd angles and it's not consistent in shape, so my optimum size is .65 for the Morel's so I should be right there. :happydance:

YoungZ 09-18-2012 08:01 PM

i concur should be pretty close to .875 ft^3 im definitely going to mount the ring as close to flush with the plastic over the strut as possible, how much clearance do you figure i would have? i need 5" minimum. i can use up to .5 ft^3 and still have a pretty nice roll off. looks awesome by the way!

tommyguns 09-18-2012 08:19 PM

Thanks for the props! That was a concern of mine also. Now that you recalculated, I will be dropping the ring an inch. Right now as they sit, the dowels are 13" for the top which attaches at the furthest point in the box, 8" for the bottom two. We could probably drop it another 1" and you would still have the 5" depth that you need and be just above the strut tower. I went a little high due to the fact that I wasn't sure how to convert the numbers, so I figured more is better. I do like the look a little lower. If you need 5" depth I wouldn't go more then maybe 1.5"'s, although tilting the angle of the ring a little forward would provide you a little more depth. I’m not a fan of that look, but that's all about taste.I need 4.5"

YoungZ 09-18-2012 09:26 PM

Nice! thanks for the info! i could get away with 4.5" if i had to. i bought the fiberglass and stuff today so i will be doing this as soon as i get my car back!

Taking shape! I really should start a build thread.

YoungZ 09-20-2012 07:44 PM

Looks Awesome Man! Can't wait to see the finished product!

tommyguns 09-20-2012 08:42 PM

Thanks guys.I'm working on the angle of the ring. I'm thinking slightly towards the seating area, following the angle of the strut tower. Any thoughts?

I'm thinking that this will be the spot for me. I really didn't want them facing the cabin, but due to their size, I don't think it will be over powering. That’s why I’m holding onto my other enclosure.

YoungZ 09-20-2012 09:15 PM

that last pic looks very much like what i had envisioned Looks real good!

tommyguns 09-20-2012 09:24 PM

I'm just playing around with it right now and there are few more ideas I have for ring placement, problem is if I keep going in and out my wife and neighbors may "think" I'm nuts. So I'm going to hold off for tonight. What did you think of the corner unit? It looks unreal installed, it's a close match to the exterior color, waiting another 24 hours before I wet sand it. Keep in mind I have thick skin, I can take it.

tommyguns 09-20-2012 09:29 PM

Matt feel free to chime in here, I value your opinion. Especially if I go three way, you know who’s got to take care of that.

Looking great so far man, still have to come look at that Infinity.

3 way hu? Man that would be a challenge in that car........I love a challenge :stirthepot:

tommyguns 09-20-2012 09:42 PM

You know it's the craziest thing, I haven't been in the FX much, maybe once a week and it hasn't happened. As far as three way is concerned, I looked into the Morel three way crossovers $$$, even though I'm thinking I just may go that way. Have to wait and see, maybe you come down and we do some testing with just using both setups as subs, individually of course.

tommyguns 09-20-2012 09:45 PM

Heres a question, do you think I will need another sub amp or if we wire them in series or parralel (not sure which one is used)there will be enough power.

Sounds like a plan. Ya I know why your not spending much time in the FX, you know your going to lose it soon. :rofl2:

Check out Hertz 3 way setups :yum:

YoungZ 09-20-2012 09:58 PM

your corner box is pretty nice man looks nice and as you said looks like a close match to factory. i'm not one to judge as i'm not terribly skilled with fiberglass

tommyguns 09-20-2012 09:59 PM

HAHAHA thats funny, your right but it's still funny. I really want to keep everything matched.

Thanks, the body work and the paint is what takes the most time. If you're covering with rug you can get away with a little more imperfections, not with paint, everything shows.
