Pioneer Navigation Unit

Hey guys. I'm still trying to decide which unit I want to go for. I was wondering if anyone here has one installed.

I've heard a lot of good things about this one: Pioneer USA - AVIC-X920BT - In-Dash Navigation AV Receiver with DVD Playback, Built-In Bluetooth and 6.1" Widescreen Display

Anyone have pics of their own or have any suggestions?

HKYStormFront 07-12-2010 07:14 PM

my friend's got this in his 350z, really nice. i've got the older D3 (and he has that in his 240 now, used to be in the Z). i messed around with it a few times now and i have to say i missed having a volume knob on the newer unit though pushing the button to adjust volume wasn't too bad. bluetooth worked great with my MotoDroid. connected first attempt with no issues, streamed pandora and flycast to the headunit without even having to think about it. pioneer makes a great double din, i highly recommend!

I had a pioneer double din in my truck, it was a great system

Pioneer is my fav when it comes to car head units! Go for it 100%

bigaudiofanat 07-12-2010 11:15 PM

I am for kenwood over pioneer but that's me. From what I hear good units though.

I've got the F900BT in mine and had the Z3 in my corvette. I loved the Z3, but don't care so much for the F900, which is the predecessor for the 920.

Things I don't like about it:
can't easily scale the map, it switches scales on its own.
can't enter destinations by name on the POI list, unless they are near your destination, current location or the cursor, so if I want to go somewhere that is in the database, I still need to know the address to look it up.

maybe if I read the manual, it would work better, but its definitely not intuitive like the Z3 is.

Waiz 07-12-2010 11:48 PM

I love my Pioneer Avic D3 which I've had for three years and still going strong so I can imagine this is as good if not better.

I would recommend buying it off Amazon or a reputable Ebay shop instead of retail, it should save you some money.

chuckd05 07-13-2010 12:23 AM

I have the x920bt and it is awesome..

Zero complaints. iPhone 4 doesn't work well with blue tooth but other phones work just fine. Very odd. That's the only negative. It still cool that it will lower my music when I get a call and I just use the cellphone speaker setting.

Pandora built in is cool but i use the reg app for now because it allows multi tasking. The pioneer app still isn't updated to multi-task with the iPhone. But the iPhone interface is flawless and works awesome. Connects right away and shows info and picture.

But the nav is great. You can type in any poi too.

DVDs are nice, interface is very modern in comparison to any kenwood deck I have seen.

Improved sound quality as well.

Prob the best money I have spent on the car.

HKYStormFront 07-13-2010 10:21 AM

other good websites to look at for a HU are sonicelectronix.com and onlinecarstereo.com, i've used both of those before to buy car audio equip, crutchfield as well but they are closer to retail price usually

chuckd05 07-13-2010 11:38 AM

my album has 3 pics of the deck with my old phone.. I am still planning on taking some better pics and doing a full write up...

stacy001 07-13-2010 12:34 PM

i installed that in my Z a few weeks ago.. love it.. will post some pics. you wont be disappointed

CaptainSlow 07-13-2010 01:21 PM

I got the Pioneer Z120BT (same as the X920BT but with a 7" screen) installed a few weeks ago and I'm very happy. There was one issue that I had with a loud, constant hissing but that went away after the installer used a different wiring harness. Overall, I'm very impressed with the unit.

You might need to get used to the scrolling because at times rather than scrolling it selects what I touched. I'm guessing it's because of the angle that the unit is at (i.e. it's easier to scroll on an iPhone than on this unit).

I have the Bose amp and speakers and after putting the head unit in the music is like night and day. I'm guessing it's because of the EQ adjustments.

Navigation, for me at least, works as expected. It doesn't have many streets in my area but that's probably because it's fairly new (2-3 years old).

One thing I've noticed is that sometimes it doesn't recognize the iPhone when I plug it in. That might be because of the iOS4 or the fact that my 3G is very slow now. I'm probably just going to get an iPod and just leave it in there. It's also a pain to open the cubby hole and look at the phone every time I get a text message.

Bluetooth works as expected and everyone I've talked to say they can hear me fine. The microphone is mounted to the left of the rear mirror.

If you have any questions about the unit let me know!

WICKED_GRIN 07-13-2010 08:37 PM

^^ The X920 is an awesome head unit! You will only find one guy who will bash this head unit! (Drives an old civic)

I just saw the pics. Looks really, really nice. Looks like the AVIC-X920BT fit in perfectly no?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, I plan on getting a back up cam. Anyone have suggestions for a camera?

WICKED_GRIN 07-14-2010 06:31 AM

^^ It does fit in perfectly!

bigaudiofanat 07-14-2010 08:06 AM

You will need the dash kit that metra makes so there will be no gap other than that fits nicely.

WICKED_GRIN 07-14-2010 02:15 PM

^^ not true!

Yes I did a pioneer install about 6 weeks ago in the z without the dash kit you have a large gap around the head unit. Stop trying to start crap.

sgthanzo 07-14-2010 05:37 PM

Big...

What would be the pros and cons of installing the PIONEER AVIC kit on the spare compartment above the audio slot?

I've a Pioneer AVIC installed on my Z and I must admit, I find it ergonomically disappointing to having to look down and manage the console while on the go.

Any tips on how my setup can/could be improved?

Thanks for any/all feedback.

H. Hanzo

bigaudiofanat 07-14-2010 06:08 PM

Your only down side would be having to cover up the stock location and fabricating a new spot in the cubby above to snugly fit the head unit. Not to mention if you do not keep the door there is a bigger STEAL ME factory when it is in even better clean sight.

Also you could have to make sure you have enough space behind to fit the back end of the unit.

sgthanzo 07-14-2010 07:24 PM

Thanks for the expert advice, Big... I guess it stays where it's at (for now). :)

stacy001 07-15-2010 12:23 AM

Did you lose your steering wheel controls when you upgraded? If so try this:

chuckd05 07-15-2010 12:58 AM

I did not use any dash kit in mine... here are a few crappy cellphone pics... the gap is very very small

Yes. The Bluetooth/phone buttons to the left no longer worked. :(

Exactly………..the gap is very very small and it’s not even an issue!! Nobody really needs the dash kit unless the installer doesn’t know how to install………….just sayin

:icon18: That is all you have is "just sayin" it is like you have nothing to say.
And this is the pioneer units with the dash kit. Depending on the model the gap might be different but with this unit, the gap was huge.

The fact is you have worked on what one, two five z's? While I have done over 12 I know what needs a dash kit and what does not. Most kenwoods are fine they have a very small gap. Compared to the pioneers which are a tad small units themselves some will need dash kits. So shut up and stop trying to start crap on every thread.

Someone in that thread was able to retain their phone functions, you may want to PM them to see what they did.

Good luck!!

CaptainSlow 07-15-2010 05:47 PM

For what it's worth I needed the dashkit for my Pioneer install. I had the Bose system and from my understanding if you have the Bose system you need the dash kit. If you have the standard stereo you can slid the stereo in and out of the OEM dash because it has the cutouts already. If I didn't have the kit there would be a gap around the dash and the head unit.

chuckd05 07-16-2010 08:07 AM

I have a PAC interface and steering wheel controls work just fine.

Also, my gap is not nearly as big as the pioneer big just posted.

Mike 07-16-2010 08:46 AM

I did not need a dash kit with the base unit, and there are no gaps.

Pics? usually you have a small gap or rather large one.

Also as I said wicked, al head units are different but from what I have done you need one.
