Kenwood dnx6140 Navigation issue

Hey guys.. I know this isn't a Kenwood forum, but thought I'd ask since I know a lot of you have this same head unit..

The other day, got in the car and hit the Nav button on the 6140.. it switched to a black screen but then never got into the actual Nav program... like usually I'll see the warning screen and then goes to the "WHERE TO" and "VIEW MAP" screen. but this didn't do that. just sits at the black screen forever..

I tried pulling the battery cable, resetting the unit (little reset button on the front) I've checked that my antenna cable is plugged in but thinking maybe the antenna died? Not sure what else to check.. any ideas?

also does anyone know what the nav button does by default if the antenna is not plugged in? Does it just drop to a black screen?

does your owner's manual say anything in the trouble shooting section?

also ask big for his advise. he's literally big on kenwood HU's.

ya I did read thru the manual.. nothing in there about the issue I'm having..

bumping my own thread... I tried a new antenna and every type of reset procedure I could find.. Still having this issue.. I wonder if the Hard drive inside it died.. Going to bite the bullet and send it in for a repair.

yah, sounds like a warranty repair. sucks that you have to do that. hope kenwood pays for the uninstall and install fees too (probably not)..

Liquid_G 06-03-2010 09:53 AM

ya its probably not under warranty anymore, but they'll still repair it if I pay for the repairs.. Funny because both me and my wife have this same headunit, (hers is fine) and I've had Kenwood HU's for years.. this is the first one I've ever had an issue with.. Just sent it off yesterday, i'll report back with the findings..

Check to make sure your video bypass wire is still grounded. If it is not that can make the until not allow you to see anything for the screen sometimes.

Also go into your settings and look for the nav settings. See if there is a default settings in there or use te button on the front of your unti to reset the whole thing.

If not call kenwood.

Thanks for the suggestion bigaudio.. but ya the video bypass wire was still good.. and reset the thing about a dozen times.. I saw a few people on some Kenwood forums have the same issue but no resolution.. So now its on the big brown truck to the Kenwood repair place..

well... got word back from the Kenwood service center....

The estimate to replace nav board.
Labor - $95.00
Parts - $450.00
plus shipping/handling.

ouch.. so now not sure if I should have this thing repaired or just get a new one? thoughts?

^^ Go with a well-known quality product......such as

Pioneer AVIC-X920BT Navigation receiver at Crutchfield Signature

I've had probably 5 different Kenwood units over the past 10 years or so.. Wife has this exact same HU in her RX8 and its been perfect.. Never had an issue with any of them until now.. plus in my opinion Kenwood > Pioneer..

WICKED_GRIN 06-10-2010 09:38 AM

^^ You really have to compare unit to unit……………….Pioneer right now has the best single din unit on earth! For double din units…….I agree with you about Kenwood being a great HU……..it comes down to personal taste……..type of Nav, Pandora, # and types of pre-outs, SD card slot etc.

Pioneer USA - DEX-P99RS - Reference Series CD Tuner with Digital DSP and USB Port with Digital Direct Signal Transmission

I would sell it on cragslist and buy a new one of your choice. Thats way too much for a used unit
