iPad in Z?
This is the first I see people install iPad in their car (iPad used as Car Audio / Car Video (yes, it's true) - Automotive Digital Marketing Professional Community (ADM)) Have anyone thinking of doing such mod in the Z. I love to have this mod to fit in the Z at where the Nav normally be, but I like the option to be able to remove and insert as will, like this one here (Video: Second-ever iPad car installation keeps it simple, maintains factory tech — Autoblog), Any serious thinker? Your thoughts?!!!
|
Maybe. ;)
*Not me doing this, I just got my headunit in. |
|
Just a thought, i can see a lot of people will probably thinking about doing this in the near future: YouTube - iPad in Car, Pt. 2, First Ever, SoundMan Car Audio

With cities and some states starting to pass legislation against texting it would seem that any device that can take the driver's eyes off the front window may start to come under legislative fire. This will get kinda interesting as times goes on and the courts start having to address issues arising from the results of this legislation..

all things said and done - having a touch screen in my dash will be nice especially if it could control the music / nav - but I would never use a iPad as the base for that - i would get a 150$ android powered tablet...
|
I think if someone can get it fits nicely in the Z, this will definitely open up a lot of options for Z and apple lovers...I think it's simply a great idea to have a removable (preferably) dash mount unit that can do all.....i think it's just pay one for the two jobs...will be great investment (in my opinions)...We'll have to wait and see....:happydance:

My buddy and I were talking about this. Imagine..
If there were some sort of dock connector /ipad conversion kit you could get from factory for ipad. Or even an aftermarket option. (they did it starting with BMW with the ipod) look how that changed everything multimedia wise. It would be cool if car manufactures could build some kind of obdII app or car app with your ipad. That would be amazing! I love working with the multi touch surface. When you use it its just like "yes that is how it should be" Economically it would make so much more sense I hate paying $1200 for a 7" touch screen that has poor software/ or is not as smooth, I just think wow I wish it was as fast as my iPhone. Anyways I hope this is something that we start to see. I love seeing new kinds of markets take off. Innovation, something that changes the industry, and quite honestly the car audio head unit industry is dying and this could be a savior. Hopefully something is done :-) |

Just a couple things to point out for my two cents. The iPad diagram does not show all the things available externally. People that get to know the company over the years know the features they want are usually there. There is no need in a diagram to point out that there are "internal antennas" "external speakers" "headset port" its expected. With The TC110 you have a pen, jog dial, and programmable launch button. Apple showed in 2007 that the best input device for their multi-touch screens is your finger. The industry has adopted this HTC, blackberry. A lot of their phones with touch screens do not have pens. Now as far as specs. Well lets just work down the list. Misinformation does no one justice 1. HD size ipad 16-64gb. The HP has 40-80. However the ipad is solid state. HP is a ata IDE @ 5400 rpms. (from what I gathered from the replacement drives available. 2. 9.7" XGA screen is incorrect. it is 9.7" LED-backlit glossy widescreen Multi-Touch display with IPS technology. Huge difference in the way you view the device. 3. Dimensions and I will add weight. The depth dimension is missing. Ohh I see why the ipad is .5" and 1.5 or 1.6lbs. The HP .8" thick & 3.1lbs. 4. Sound mono speakers. (can you tell a difference in stereo with something as small as a tablet) also (any speaker that size will sound like crap anyways) Its a personal device I prefer a good pair of headphones. However the ipad speakers are not bad. 5. USB & SD card slot is available on the ipad through the camera kit. (for pictures) 6. I dont need to talk about why there is no rj45 or rj11 jack lol. Wifi + 3G holla. 7. Video output yes. 8. Headphone plug yes. Now the 7 years remark. The ability to create a tablet device has been out for a while. Apple was not the first to the market. They were the first to get it done right. An amazing mobile OS that is user friendly. Efficient processor, solid state drives, etc. It may not have everything that people want, but in my opinion it is currently the best solution for what it is. What I love is Apple increases competition, they drive the industry forward. You see HP coming out with a new tablet device and dell as well. Its just like the iPhone all over again. The iphone changed the industry from razors and slow *** phones. To the smart phone not being just a business staple but a way to change your life. If the iPad is not your cup of tea there will be other choices. When the iphone came out they said it was 5 years ahead of everyone. 3 years later people are just now starting to catch up. Be honest with your self if you have used a iphone and then went to go use one of the phones with the slow/choppy interface you see what they meant. However it has gotten much better. Its partially the tech that is on it. However it is more how it is packaged together. That is where everyone fails. Apple built a mobile OS from the ground up to complement the devices features not the other way around. I talked about innovation. Apple may have not done it first, however in the last 10 years they did show they were the only ones who knew how to do it right. 500k sold the first week I think the people have spoken. Anyways don't wanna turn this into a flame thread that will go know here I just felt like some misinformation needed to be stopped. |

Ipad is a piece of overrated overpriced POS. and I own a iphone, macbook pro and ipod nano.
It is nothing but a oversized iphone without the phone options. |
I like the ipad I would never pay 500 for it but people have already hacked it and are playing crysis even on it and doom. It is powerful but would only buy it if it was selling for like 250.

1.0GHz (2010) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 1.2GHz (2003)
|
Its not really a mac vs PC debate.. Its more about how much the ipad fails.. Its a giant itouch. sure you can make it do other things by adding this attachment and that dock, but most tablets can already do those things natively.. And the comment about 500k sold in the first week, the people have spoken.. hahaha.. I'll refer you to this:

Try running Windows Vista on a PC, then wipe the HD, and install Ubuntu Linux on it. Guess which machine will seem faster? At the same MHz speed... I own the iPad and I will tell you it is way FASTER than my old PC laptop running a 1.2GHz PIII Mobile CPU and Windows 7. |

That was cool. I Think the first install failed to adapt what fishman did. The portability! You can keep it in your home/work. When you hop in your car, just plug it in. This ALSO reduces the possibility of getting it stolen from your car. |
Didn't I start a thread about the iPad inside the Z already? Oh yeah i did! :ughdance:
http://www.the370z.com/audio-video/1...-carputer.html Yes, I really like the idea of having an iPad in my Z. It would be awesome if some company manufactured a custom inlay similar to what fishman made for the Z. The chrome could go, though. |

Totally! Comparing GHz is like comparing megapixels. Numbers really do not matter. Its the features that the CPU takes advantage of. Hyperthreading, turbo boosting, multi cores, size of the die, and how efficient. The whole package is what matters not the speed of the processor. |
Anyways back to what you can actually do to integrate the ipad into the car.
1) How wide is the center console in the Z? Is there any point where the width of the plastic is a little more than 9.56" and stays consistent for about 7.47 inches. If the space is there how would you go about finding someone to make holder to fit the ipad with a dock connector similar to fish mans setup so you can remove it? The space would probably need to be ventilated to some extent for cooling. It would be awesome if a company like metra did this.. 2) The dock connector would need to charge and provide audio output. The charging may be more difficult to find now since the iPad charger is 10watt vs ipod/phones 5v. With a typical head unit you have separate channel pre-amp outputs. You can run the RCA out to a pre-amp equalizer and that would do the hi/low pass. However I would rather run it through a pre-amp that did not have a eq because you can do a lot of those adjustments on the amplifier right? I think that is all you would need. What else would you recommend? Some guys talked about onkyo's dock that provides fiber out. However I have not tested it but Im pretty sure the ipad only supports stereo out. Anyways... Ima search for some products and let you guys know what I come up with... Anyone know of anyone that is good with making dash kits? |
To address what I talked about previously.
1)I contacted Metra awaiting for a reply. 2)To boost/separate the RCA output you need a line driver. I will let you know what Metra says, and what type of setup I choose. Chris |
I found this product. If I end up doing the iPad solution this is the line driver/eq that I will most likely use.
AudioControl THREE.1 In-dash equalizer with 2-way crossover at Crutchfield Signature let me know if you guys find anything else.. |
Honestly, speed isnt all that important for something this small. 1.0 Ghz is plenty. I dont understand why ppl look at just the processor speed. :shakes head:
I dont have an Ipad but i sure do love my iphone. I see no point in wasteing money on a ipad when my iphone does everything and more! Ryan |
I work with Windows and support windows at work, but at home, I use primary Mac (macbook, iMac with intel i7/2T HD), two iphones (!!!) and thinking of getting the ipad soon...apple tend to be more expensive but you pay for what you get...wonder if someone ever run windows OS on an apple computer before...I did, surprisingly, it way faster to run windows OS on a mac compare to a pc...

Awesome set up, this is exactly what i'm looking for...now we need someone with a Z for testing:icon18: |
So I did some measuring on my car.... I have a touring without the NAV. It would be really tight, but it may be possible to do Fishman's setup in the cubby, but you would have to adjust the air ducts some how. It turns out the iPad is about 1/4 of an inch too wide to just fit in between.
Does anyone know if you can you buy the upper portion of the trim piece somewhere? |
|
Nice! Now that I know I can get a replacement part...I feel more confident taking my Dremel to my dash pieces. :P Thanks, CBRich.

iPad is so much fail it's not even funny. I really don't want to vent too much BUT, the fact that you can even remotely compare it to a 7 year old product speaks wonders.
Take my 12" Eee PC with NVIDIA ION graphic with win7 and add a REAL ssd, like a m series g2 with TRIM and now you're talking. At least you will get USB ports (and HDMI) and can run any software you like. People will install iPads because they are simple and/or because they are brainwashed hipsters. I'm going to do a double screen mount and build a car pc. I've built many custom gaming PC's for thousands less than retail. I've even priced out a system from < $1500 that would blow both the factory nav and the iFail out of the water (with Xonar DX2 sound too). Oh and you can upgrade it too and remove the battery if there's ever a problem! |

Yes, a custom built carPC is definitely a valid option to consider. I think it is a little naive to think that everyone who is considering the ipad is a brainwashed hipster.
I think it comes down to what meets peoples needs. Take me for example, I could easily build a custom carPC and install it. On top of that I could easily write my own custom front end, visualizers or any other software I want for it as well. Just because I can do that doesn't mean I want to or need to. I need a device that can meet the following needs. The iPad does all of the following good enough. Uses a very nice touch screen. Boots up fast Can play audio and video easily Can access Internet to check work emails through exhange Has GPS navigation capabilities. Does not require a lot of my time to keep running Has a known interface that my passengers know how to use Allows me to program for if I want to Features I don't care about Satellite radio DVD playback (physical media is on it's way out) I don't think anyone is saying that the iPad is the ultimate car media solution and all others suck.
