How much is the K40 system?

LudeSH01 03-21-2010 12:23 PM

it can run between 800 and 1200 depending on where you get it and if you purchase the optional laser diffuser...

BalanBro 03-21-2010 02:12 PM

Nice job! I am somewhat partial to Kenwood myself, as there are so many accessories which can be added. HD Radio can be nice if you listen to alot of FM too.

Regarding the radio, did you use the typical Nissan wire harness and antenna adaptor? Were any amplifier integration kits needed to work with the bose amp?

SlikNik 03-21-2010 05:06 PM

very nice

BoostAddict 03-21-2010 05:55 PM

Nice install!

Thinking about doing the Pioneer Z110BT on mine.

LudeSH01 03-21-2010 07:22 PM

yes just wire harness kits needed, no special amp adapter or anything, just wire to wire for the factory cable, power the bose amp with remote output from the headunit which is on the factory plug, and be sure to wire up the ant power to the adapter cable for the am/fm.. Be advise when changing out headunits there will be 2 cables unused from factory headunit, I believe they are xm and onboard security through the factory headunit which controlls the beeps and horn honks when using the fob or door button to lock or unlock, however if someone were to unlock the doors without the fob or door button the alarm will still work, just will not get any confirmation beep or honk with locking and unlocking the car. Still haven't found a fix for that issue, Im just going to go with an aftermarket alarm and get the smartstart setup to make it worth it.

xiven 03-25-2010 09:54 AM

how do you access the oem headunit? does the gear shifter panel just pop out?

OMGWTFBBQ 03-25-2010 10:52 AM

The gear shifter bezel just pops off. You unscrew the two kick panels and pull them off first. Then unscrew the panel that surrounds the OEM head unit.

Ok I'll try that. I ordered a kenwood dnx6140 and they sent me the 2010 model dnx6960. Invoice said 6140 and everything. I'm not complaining. Its a nice upgrade. The only difference may be the software. Thats about all I can see from the screenshots posted on this thread compared to AK's thread. I'm going to try the Axxess steering control adapter and see if that works better than the PAC one.

How do you run the antennas(navi/sirius) and bluetooth from the headunit?

I wish laser diffuser was legal in California. :/

Vegasboricua 03-25-2010 08:10 PM

How much did you spend on parts?

2fast4thelaw 03-25-2010 08:15 PM

Wow, I like the red leather!

No offense but you chose a really bad place to mount your amp! In a high profile car like your Z thats just asking to get jacked with your audio gear hangin out in the open like that. You really should relocate that amp as soon as possible like behind the drivers seat or in the spare tire area.

However your radar system is really sweet.

bigaudiofanat 03-25-2010 08:36 PM

Good job man

AK370Z 03-25-2010 09:37 PM

SWEET Install(s) man! Big  I have been VERY happy with my Kenwood DNX6140. The user interface in DNX6960 is a lot better than 6140 IMO. I have the exact same Mic position and works pretty well  . I must thank MATT (Bigaudiofanat) for a fantastic job

VERY Nice upgrade. The interface (looking at OP's) is much better than 6140. I hope they don't charge your credit card later if they do find out :ugh:

Truly, I never got around thanking you for those video. Those are great videos for ANYONE who's looking to install audio stuff in the Z.

Matt 03-26-2010 07:14 AM

With that size amp, I understand there isn't many places for it to go, but attached to the box would be my last option, personally.

Great job on the install! Very clean, very nice!

Would the amp fit on the shelf behind the driver or passenger?

LudeSH01 03-27-2010 07:34 AM

Yea 2fast. It's a bad location right now. But I'm still working on adding a Jo 4 channel and changing out factory speakers. Then build a cover for the amps. I still have 3.5 inches of clearance so right now that's the plan. Behind the seat was going to melt the back of the seat and I won't screw into the plastic so.. Will post more pics when complete

nuTinmuch 03-27-2010 12:20 PM

Very nice setup. Extremely clean.

phelan 03-27-2010 01:24 PM

Great setup.

General question for all you guys who are modding the head unit, if that's your GPS screen, what do you think about the placement? Seems pretty low to me to be reading directions / looking at maps on

You take what you can get. Right now I'm using my iPhone TomTom app which is mounted to the passenger knee bolster pad. Is it ideal...nope. Is it better than nothing? You betcha.

spearfish25 03-28-2010 09:10 AM

Lude,

How do you like the integration of the Kenwood so far? Is it easy to listen to the radio/iPod and have Nav running?

How is the traffic with the nav...well integrated?

The 6960 is high on my list, but I need something that gets rave reviews. Putting a new navi unit in the car in the next couple weeks.

alvinmathew88 03-28-2010 07:28 PM

Wait.. How did you manager to hook up the Bose speakers to headunit & Use a different set of sub?

bigaudiofanat 03-28-2010 08:26 PM

I do not think it would be possible to use the factory speakers with the new head unit the ohms of the bose speakers would burn out the head units amp. Plus I do not think his model has the bose system.

He has a touring from the looks of the pics. So, he would have to have the Bose system.

alvinmathew88 03-29-2010 04:13 AM

Im really curious as to how OP used Bose + Kenwood unit together..

bigaudiofanat 03-29-2010 06:49 AM

The bose speakers can not be that good compared to what aftermarket would be. I just hope he does not fry his head unit that is all I am worried about.

LudeSH01 03-29-2010 07:21 AM

hey fatnat,

it will not blow my headunit for all it is doing is sending a high level signal to the bose amp... thus the bose amp will not allow the volume go any higher than 22 or 23 lets say and as u turn it up, only the sub gets loud and clean, the bose amp is still the main audio source for the factory speakers, until next week once I receive my component setup, amp and mids.. Then the bose amp will be completely bypassed and will have far more superior sound through the car, then ill build onto that box, make a nice fiberglass cover and wrap that in vinyl...along with the rest of the box... But do appreciate everyones opinions and comments..

If anybody wants to mount an amp that can get pretty hot and mount that behind their seat or on the shelf and screw into the plastic be my guest... With my back windows blacked out and the hatch closed all you really see is the wire... But definately took all considerations..

I like the kenwood interface, I looked into the av interface to mirror my reverse cam and it seemed like the option wasnt there or was blacked out...
Have not yet put the nav traffic in to give a review on that... The only pain in the *** with the touchscreen and driving the z none the less a stick shift can be a hassle with selecting and changing songs on the ipod. Thats why I need to get my SWI working properly, it just works intermitantly..

Any suggestions.?

FuszNissan 03-29-2010 07:38 AM

So far so good. I've had it for awhile and everything is good right now.

Worked on it this past Friday night. Put in the Bluetooth, ran the antennas, ipod cable, axxess steering wheel control and wired up the head unit. Powered it on and everything looked fantastic. I was super stoked. The GUI was f'in sick! The steering wheel controls I was not able to get programmed and Sirius wasn't working cuz I didn't have the adapter plug. Didn't realize that til I saw the plug wasn't gonna fit. Looked online and saw best buy had it at a store 20 miles away but it was already 10:30 at night so they were closed. Rode around and called a buddy to test the bluetooth. It works pretty good on both ends. Called it a night at almost 1 just fascinated with all the features it has. Next morning I woke up early and started wiring the backup cam. Took a good look at everything and decided against doing that part myself. Looked online and found a local shop that opened at 10. They took me right in and I showed the installer exactly how I wanted it hooked up and for them to basically finish up the install but not button it up since I need to put on the sirius adapter plug. I wanted them to check the cam first and make sure it was working. Its from the same seller that AK used on ebay. They hooked it up and I had them point it up into the light. No whiteout could be seen so I said go ahead and install it. I did notice that it didn't have the colored lines on it like AK's. Instead it has lines with numbers on each side indicating how many feet away you are. After it was installed, it looked fine. The white balance outside isn't the best but its not that bad. I can tolerate it. I kinda wish it adjusted itself. At night its grainy but that doesn't really bother me that much either. The axxess control adapter had to get the firmware updated in order for the controls to work. Also they tapped into 2 wires on the factory harness that were for the controls on the car. It was a bugger to get working but I'm glad they figured it all out. Also, one other thing I noticed this morning on my way to work. I happen to turn on my navigation and the road i was driving on when i looked down turned red on the navi. I was like WAAAAHHH???? I'm guessing having sirius hooked up that it integrates with the garmin navi and shows traffic cuz when I was on that road that was red i was in heavy traffic. So I'm very impressed so far. It compliments the Z immensely.

I'll take some pics later and post them on here.

Hey Xiven,

How's the response for the Axxess steering wheel control...I had the PAC garbage before, which was unbearably slow. I know it's worse than most people had cause I really had to wait around 10 seconds to move!!! WHAT???? A little lag would've been okay, but that was terrible. Anyway, I just want to know if the Axxess lags.

I don't know if you ever got a response to this, but I just put the Axxess in after fighting with the PAC unit. The Axxess unit is instantaneous in its response. On the PAC, I might hit the volume button more than once, thinking that it didn't take. Then all of a sudden the volume would shoot up. When I hit the Axxess button, it changes the volume immediately. At least as good as the stock if not better. It's a whole lot easier to setup and hook up also IMO.

sweeet...

Sprite 05-13-2010 09:44 PM

sweet dude, im copying your mods!
also, I was curious as to where you got the receiver face plate (the one that covers over the A/C controls and such.

NewYorkJon34 05-19-2010 04:27 PM

Does the Laser jammer still work efficently with it being behind your bumper and all?

mototrmpt 10-16-2010 08:27 PM

Xiven and Tree,
I just swapped out my PAC for the Axxess hoping to get radio station up or down to hit the next preset station. Instead it just moves to the next available station. My HU is the Kenwood DNX6140. Does either one of your go to the next preset station? If so, did you do anything special.

Thanks.
