Cerwin Vega spare tire subwoofer

I installed a 12" powered Cerwin Vega subwoofer to replace the crappy stock Bose sub. It's only a little taller than the stock sub. I had an 8" powered sub behind the drivers seat but this thing blows it out of the water.

Innnteresting. Had no idea there was a product for this.

Is that the sport sized spare? If so, I'm ordering one today.

I didn't know there was anything like this either. I just stumbled across it. Yep, it's the sport spare. I ordeted mine from sonic electronix, had it in a few days. Part # is VPAS 12ST

Wow!! That looks awesome! I put so much work into my little custom build, but this looks kind of perfect.

Does the trunk trim/carpet/foam stuff all fit properly?

The enclosure you did came out awesome and doesn't use up any of your trunk space.

This sub sticks up maybe 3/8" higher than the bose did but when you put all the trim and carpet back down it feels completly flat. It really couldn't have fit any better. I figured I was going to have to take out the spare tire in order to install it.

CRiZO 01-22-2019 11:10 AM

The fact it fits so well in the factory spare definitely sold me, I couldn't get myself to give up the cargo space. Looks like I'll finally install my sound deadening too this weekend so I can put this in at the same time.

Stoked to free my doors of playing those frequencies, should make it all sound much better. Thanks for sharing.

What length of 8 gauge did you need to run? Like 10 feet? Thanks

Yeah, I didn't want to give up what little trunk space we have either. I'm really surprised how well the sub works, it exceeded my expectations. I bought 20' of 8 gauge but didn't use all of it. 10' wouldn't have done it.

Jayhovah 01-22-2019 12:25 PM

Even cheaper on amazon.

Nice find!

Wow, it showed I think $269.00 earlier when Jayhovah posted that.

Yeah something like that. Shipped and sold from a different vendor.. perhaps we generated a mini-flood of orders and they ran their stock out.

At the time you posted it, it showed 7 in stock. I hope we get kickbacks for the advertising.

Really dumb question I assume since it is “powered” no amp is needed?

I hate to repeat what has already been said but THIS IS SWEET!

Cheaper then buying a custom spare tire box by a boat load and it’s compact!

My factory audio took a dump and instead of diagnosing I figured upgrade time. So 1 piece of the puzzle solved.

I was skeptical when I bought it, I thought I might be throwing away $300.00 but I'm really impressed with how well it performs, especially for a sub that fits like the factory bose pos.

Considering I was happy with the factory Bose pos sub that’s high praise lol 😂

Night and day difference 😎

DragonSlave02 01-26-2019 08:37 AM

Wow. Been thinking about some how hacking the boss sub for a little more power but with this I don’t have to. Thanks for the post 😊

Personally with a plastic shell I can't see it holding a candle to something like the wicked box or even a custom enclosure. Better then the bose I would imagine yes. Going to install on in the wife's FX35 and see what it's like.

Hey Matt,
It's actually in an aluminum shell and is heavy duty. It's nothing like the cheap plastic piece of crap Bose. I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised at how well it works.

CRiZO 01-28-2019 11:15 AM

When I got mine I was like "okay let's see how they put a 12" woofer in this thing". The entire driver has a whole through the middle of it, like a donut. Pretty neato, I hadn't seen that before.

I didn't have time to install, but it's a very solidly built piece. It's all metal, but lighter than you'd expect due to being cast aluminum.

Hows the rattling sitting directly on the spare tire?

It come's with a couple of extra bolts and bolts down tight against the spare tire the same as the Bose sub. There's no rattling at all.

Is this sub compatible with the stock Bose head unit and amp? In other words, can you just remove the Bose sub and replace it with the Cerwin Vega sub without need to modify the amp, wiring, etc.?

No. You need to run a #8 power wire to the new sub and you'll want to run the sub speaker wire from the head unit directly to the new sub.

cavemancan 02-25-2019 12:38 PM

Tax return is almost here then boom new everything lol :eekdance:

With good audio the stock one doesn't seem that bad. XM for eample sounds pretty good, though I refuse to pay for it. FM is definitely not up to snuff. Good CD sounds ok.

Always wanted more kick but didn't want to sacrifice what little space there was so this might be the ticket. Now to see if I can find it under $300 again.

Sonic electronics has it for $299 and when I bought it they gave me a 15% off code.

Pending install...

Okay okay so my 12 inch audiofrog in custom ported box with 1k running on it may or may not shake my car like a jar full of bolts

Just an FYI, I wasn't able to wire this to the Bose with Nav system. I ultimately did the nav delete and it sounds fantastic now!

Likewise with my highly controversial dual 8" Bazooka tubes with 600 watts running to them. What's your point? :shakes head:

Also fits in ‘doughnut’

Just to let those know.. I installed this sub in a base 2018 Z which has the smaller (‘doughnut’) spare. I had the whole system installed by local shop. The sub sits perfectly flat if you place it in. I have a small bump as the local shop put a wing nut on top of the bolt holding it down( so easy to remove if I need to access spare). If I trim the foam underneath the cardboard liner, it should be pretty flat. No rattle at all. Huge difference in the bass fill. I don’t use the remote. Had them adjust the remote so that I just adjust the Bass with the 1400NEX head unit. Used Focal PS165V1 components for mid and tweeter. Small external focal amp. All fit well and hidden behind dash. Ran in Network mode, but the local shop still used the crossovers.

Head unit has a glossy capacitive screen so a bit of glare, but have had it for a few weeks and don’t notice any problem viewing (but granted a bit of glare at times.) However, nice reactive screen.

Sub will rattle the rear view mirror easily.. all the Bass I need, although I’m not one to play it so you hear me 2 blocks over. That being said, I still need to ‘feel’ the bass.

Meh, 2 8" Bazooka tubes is plenty of bass for the majority of people in 370 or most hatchbacks. Not for ME, mind you, but then, I'm not normal. lol.

Really, those will put out a decent amount of bass. Not going to hammer at 30Hz, but they'll fill in the bottom end nicely, which is all most "normal" people want, to be honest.

Would you mind posting a detailed write up on how you installed the sub and wired it? I'm trying to upgrade my sound system and have been looking for a nice sub enclosure that wouldn't take up too much space so this would be perfect, but i have no clue how i would wire it up since i have a pioneer AVIC-5000NEX HU.

Simple with an aftermarket hu.
1) #8 red wire to battery for main power (fuse protected)
2) #8 ground wire attached to chassis.
3) RCA cable from sub output on hu to either one of the two rca plugs on sub
4) Blue wire to remote turn on wire on head unit.
5)Done
