Tablet Integration Poll (Updated Images)

Hey Guys,

I've been working on a tablet integration design for my Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8".

Just wondering if anyone would be interested in it if I were to provide a page in the marketplace?

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/1U...=w1920-h941-rw

with a double din set-up:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/5i...=w1920-h941-rw

The parts will be 3D Printed.

As of right now, there is no price and this is still a WIP because I still need to make a design mechanism to give functionality to the power and volume buttons (will be physical buttons on the lower portion of the tablet holder). Also, I am trying to source local vendors to help out adding alcantara around the front face plate. If anyone likes the naked design, I can keep it "As printed"

Would be interested if mini4 compatible, but also compatible with regular double din head units, not just nav models.

So you want to place it where the double din/standard radio units are placed?

No, I mean the bottom curvature would be a bit different between the two setups wouldn't it?

No. In fact, I'm putting in a double din next month and already ordered the metra face plate.

here's some pictures:

Here is a close-up of the curvature on the metra face plate and my current 14 radio

Count me in!! I sent you a PM.

If this would also work for Nexus 7, definitely would be in.

Interested. Would be nice if it were compatible with a variety of tablets if possible.

I don't want to have to push a button to turn on the device - it should power on with the car. I'm also concerned how good/bad the buttons will look, but I'll reserve judgment until some form of mock up is presented.

That clamp design seems it would have the potential of being at least adaptable to some different tablets.

The power on bit would be dependant on your tablet wouldn't it? I'm only familiar with iOS stuff but it does cycle the screen when it is plugged into power so as long as it is unlocked it should turn on. The "always on" option would probably have to be selected as well so it doesn't go back to sleep with inactivity.

What would be real nice but probably impossible is if it would automatically turn on dashcommand when it starts. That's the biggest reason to have the display for me, but I can't see it happening without doing it manually. And I don't think HP Tuners has a standalone 370z program without running ProEFI so that's out too. Srill, its be nice to have the DC app, and the GoPro app too. Both already work on my head unit via CarPlay but this would be easier.

Regardless, it's nice to see someone that has a bezel that could forward with.

The issue is that I do not own every tablet, so it'll have to be to a specific few, unless someone is willing to send me their tablet to get dimensions off of (or PM me the specifics I would need to make it work). If you look at my current set-up, the top and bottom edges at the tablet or almost flush with the actual display portion of the screen. The sides are wider to accommodate the fingerprint reader/home, back, and recent apps button (on an iPad mini 4, it would be for the one button). It would cost more as I would have to take time to make sure all of the changes work properly on my current 3D model.

Yeah, the Power/Volume set-up would be dependent upon each tablet, but not hard to implement. The thought process for those buttons is for when I am out of town for a week and the tablet goes dead. Tablet take a while. I have thought of just buying a separate power bank in those events.

As far auto-starting a specific app, you'll have to figure that out on your own, as this is only a tablet integration housing. If you had an android tablet, I'm sure there is a ROM or aftermarket app that could solve that issue.

I have the Nexus 7, and there's a kernel (Timur's Kernel if you want to search/read more) you can put on it that will have it turn on automatically when it receives power (Car turns on) and then when power goes away (Car turns off) it will shut down and go into a deep sleep mode and can last for a pretty long time. Unless it bricks, you'll never have to use any of the buttons and it can be a fixed installation.

I have the tablet all set up for installation into my car, I just have been trying to find the best way to mount it and also wire it as well. I would certainly try this out if you were to sell it.

Or the internal battery cable is jostled loose during a bumpy car ride and you have to take the whole back off the device to reconnect it :shakes head:

You're not wrong! Though I've not read the cable jostling loose being an issue with most of the tablet installation threads I've read. Mainly occasional freezing that requires resetting. I've seen some people have a small button that acts as the power button to let you reset it without removing the tablet itself.

I think my ideal set up have to be able to easily remove the tablet for updating, or modifying the set up. A company is/was selling a float mount kit that holds the tablet in place using magnets. These were super expensive if I remember right...pay to play i suppose. I think I'd sacrifice some flexibility to get a better price point.

Here's a link to a video of the float mount kit. I believe the one for the Nexus 7 is discontinued, but offered for Ipad mini and air.

I just bought a right angle USB Type B cable, so it should minimize the cable being jostled loosely. In fact, you can't fit a straight USB Type B because the A/C vent would interfere.

I used to have a 2013 Nexus 7, but it broke, so I got the Tab S2 8". The USB is connected to the cigarette lighter in the passenger well, so you could still connect it to a laptop or Tablet PC to incorporate any updates to it. I did that after I put in my SD card. I wanted to add more files, so I just plugged in through there.

if not, then you'd have to remove the whole dash unit like normal because this clam-shell design is screwed into the same mounting screws as the A/C vents.

The kit in the video like is a kit that I really do not like. It's not at all plug and play and have you seen what they charge for it?? Way over priced.
