It's been a weekend hard at work and it is only Friday night! I have been pushing through what I expected to be the hardest part of the design "the TABS" over the last few days. And I have to say they are coming along much faster than I could have ever anticipated!!
So great news!! I have designed all but the top center tab and the lowest tabs near the temperature controls. Although, I am hoping to knock them out tomorrow after I get done hanging out with some of the MAZOC guys out here in Columbia, MD for Z's and Coffee!! Let's hear your comments!! What do you think of the progress? http://www.the370z.com/members/asorg...4-top-tabs.jpg |
it might sound a bit like hyperbole, but i am utterly amazed by the great progress you've made in a relatively short time. though when i say short time it isn't to take away from all the hours you've invested in front of computer screen to clean up/modify the model.
not to mention, i've worked on cars my whole life (first my dad's cars, then my older brother's, and finally mine). the ability to create modified versions of a cars plastic components, has always been out of reach of the common guy. watching this project develop is akin to watching the future unfurl in front of my eyes. the possibilities are essentially endless. as far as the tabs themselves. they look super clean and correctly positioned. |

I'm really thankful to have such a supportive community to keep me on track lol. The next thing on the table for the weekend is to clean up some rough patches on the backside. Then attach all the tabs. It's not far now from the redesign for the custom monitor. I am definitely getting close to the point of no return with picking the final monitor though... Once I lay out the area I can not adjust easily for other monitors. |

That may not be as far off as we thought lol!! |
She will be able to handle a lot of commands from what I have read, but will require an active internet connection to do so.
Basic commands such as open X program will work without internet but anything major will need a connection. |
As promised here are a few renders of the progress this week and weekend. It may be into next week before I have some more work to show since I am making my move into DC over the weekend. And there is still a lot of packing to do. I will keep diligent of the responses to the thread though so let me know what you think of the progress!!

I am officially moved in, unpacked and back to designing. It is taking some time with the nitpicking job of adjusting each of the points around individually but it is nearly there. The front is in great shape. Main point of focus for me right now is to fix the port for the ignition button to mount and adjust around that area.
I took a few screenshots of the amount of vector points I am dealing with to make this happen. You may understand why this boring part is taking so long, especially if you think that I'm moving these mostly one at a time... I overlayed the original scan in a blue so you can see where the cloth wraps around the stock dash. And also, you can see the low spots that I still have to work through. As a bonus it make the dash look like a spider-man suit LOL!:ughdance: http://www.the370z.com/members/asorg...r-points-2.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/asorg...r-points-3.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/asorg...r-points-1.jpg Once I finish the renders I will post them up here later today! |
F**k me man so much detail it hurts to think about it X( haha it's looking quite nicely from where you first started man very nice indeed! :) I mean I'm no pro or anything but that looks on point brotha! Good work haha.
And hey I also wanted to add another idea to consider. Maybe you could have an option where the ignition button can be changed colors with LEDs or something? Or sell the product with material options such as Carbon Fiber, different leather types/colors and stitching too? Just a suggestion for later down the road man. :) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Wow you are really moving forward nicely! I like the "Spider Man" look, LOL.

If you wanted constant wifi, you'd have to have one of those wireless cards, and they are $40 or so a month. So, unless you're a heavy commuter, it may not be worth it |

I have been looking into aftermarket starter switches with LED lights so that's definitely a possibility! I kind of agree with @NickTurnon right now. I'm having to decide whether to get the dash piece injection molded through my local contact because of the complexity of the rear tabs. Or make molds to do carbon fiber or fiberglass, which could be fabric/vinyl wrapped, ect. It all comes down to those pesky tabs making things so complicated... |

Alright I finished the renders and got them uploaded to the photo album a little earlier. They are just a little more polished than the vector point ones from earlier. But I like them better lol.

I put in the overtime last night for about six hours after I worked my full time job. I finished the mesh clean-up work and welded all the tabs except the ones with the metal clips and the two lower ones that connect to the shifter area. I have also decided on a screen and should hopefully have it here in about a week!
I was pretty disappointed once I finally got the overall dimensions for all the screens I was looking at. Although the active area fit well into the area needed the casing was inches to wide. Having to rework the vents is out of the question so I had to downsize from the 15.6 I wanted to a 13.3. Not a huge loss and I was still able to keep the native 1080p and stay in the 300 nit brightness as well. Overall I think it was a good decision. |

Alright everyone,
I finished up the base dash model tonight and published it to a 3d model veiwer site called sketchfab. I'll post the link below to it. Unfortunately the forum doesn't support their BB code yet (already asked ak370z about it :rofl2:). Soon as I have my hands on the monitor I will start to polish out the new design a bit and get it sent of for the 3d print prototype. Please follow the link and let me know what you think, and if you like what you see don't be afraid to hit that like button on Sketchfab :tiphat:... Also there seem to be some gliches around the tab where they connect to the dash but they aren't present in my model so it will take a little time to figure that out. This and that custom single gauge A-pillar pod are my favorite 'one-off' parts I've seen on this forum.

Dude, that is awesome! I was going to say that you will most definitely have to remove the bezel off whatever screen you are using to accommodate this fixture. A custom bezel is almost inevitable with this setup :( unless you find something that fits snugly.
Don't forget about the connections! |

Thought I would throw this out there for you guys on the forum. I posted this pic out on my Instagram feed to get some thoughts from people. I think I have already discussed it on here but just in case I'd love some feedback from you all on which monitor we should use (as long as size works).
http://www.the370z.com/members/asorg...han-others.jpg Help us CHOOSE OUR MONITOR! These are the monitors we have limited it down to. Each has its own pros and cons. Monitor #1 // is infrared so it can even be used with a gloved hand. The downside is that the monitor is very sensitive and may read things as input that are not. Monitor #2 // has a large viewing area and native 1080p resolution but is not as bright as the other two. Monitor #3 // is the brightest and has native 1080p resolution. But it is two inches smaller than the others. |
I'd go with monitor #2. If you need any wire diagrams for anything let me know I'll try to be of help...
