Default GPS Antenna Mount On Defroster Vent?

I had the idea of mounting the antenna for the GPS on my Pioneer on the defroster vent plate for the windshield. It's recessed lower than the dash and would stick up less. I'm not sure it's worth the trouble but has anyone ever taken it off? There are 2 circular covers on it with plenty of room near the ends. The covers look semi-transparent and I'm thinking they are photoelectric sensors for the auto lights, not sure if they are mounting clips too.

Does that defrost plate come out without taking that dash out? If it's a bitch I may just put it where everyone else does on the flat part near the tweeter. After searching this is the only post I found but it was never answered.

The vent area to the left of AK's. I'm guessing running the wire is harder too.
