Quality billet spacers with the proper studs should be fine. Porsche has done this for years. I've raced in HSR and PCA with spacers with no failures. The problems show up when people use poorly made cast metal universal spacers, sometimes stacked, to get the fit they want. I wouldn't use that type as a coaster for my coffee mug.
