Actually, the VR38DETT was rated properly from the factory. Depending upon what day/dyno you are on, you will net anywhere from 390 to 420awhp. Given the fact that drive-train loss is not a singlular calculable number, there is no real way to measure flywheel hp without an engine dyno. But, best guess numbers were around 480-490 crank horsepower.

The tune and restrictive stock exhaust is what caused the differences in power. Keep in mind that the GT-R has four cats. Two as "down-pipes" and two in the mid-pipe. Very restrictive. Timing in the factory tune was pansy, as well. Merely adding a mid-pipe sans cats and changing the timing would net 30-40awhp. Up the boost three psi and you were looking at nearly +80.
