VDC does more than cut power to your rear tires. It also modulates the brakes on all four wheels to regain stability.

Last I heard, Audi was working on a system that didn't slow the car while trying to maintain control (most stability systems using braking to regain control). The new Audi system attempts to apply power to straighten the car instead. Not sure how this is coming along though.
