What you describe sounds like rod knock. Which means you may need to make plans to tap into your emergency fund for a new motor.

Get oil analysis, as this sounds like a rod bearing
But you stated it’s been doing it a long time & once rod bearings start making noise
Hopefully you’ll find that it might be something vibrating & causing the noise
