If I had to guess the problem happens when you shock load the input shaft. Say you are in it all the way and you hit a bump, you loose traction, and then the car hooks back up hard. That's what will kill an input shaft on the street. Drag strip issues all depend on how good the prep is. If it is a good prep, it can be very hard on drive train parts.
