Rep=reputation. The idea is that people can rep you for knowledgeable or helpful posts. You can leave a message when you rep, and you can read the messages left for you on your User Control Panel page as mults mentioned.
Some people abuse the system and rep daily between themselves. I wouldn't know anything about that
Just don't rep stupid people. The worst is when some idiot starts a ridiculous thread and seeing that they somehow have rep points
