I got this video and think that its the contact patch and weight that will help on a stock car. As power and speed becomes a factor, you'd want a larger contact patch and why subaru owner go 255+ on all fours...

Im sure that you can find lighter 19" rims and even lighter wider width tires compared to those 18 that would get better times...I search weights of both rims and tires on TireRack and take that into consideration other than the customer and magazine reviews.
