The gear should be down shift automatically when the car getting slow down and it should be smooth between changing gear. Has it done it since? Could have been road debris or you ran over something...and you heard it at the same time...

That said, an automatic transmission can't grind gears, all the gears are enguaged throughout the transmission (shifting occurs due parts of the transmission being held in place by clutch packs and/or bands)...

In any case, it would be a good idea to take it in.
