Do not feel bad, the salesman who sold me the car had to call another dealership to figure out how to open the hatch!

Incidentally, I've heard of hatches/trunks having a "dual stage" safety-type latch, but this is only if it was opened and then not closed all the way. It not opening when the button is pressed is definitely a problem with the springs, as the thread points out.
