For the normal driver, after the first 1K, I don't see why waiting 3-4K every change AFTER the first will be fine. My point was simply that doing the very first one should be done sooner than later.

I grew up learning that (and I'm REALLY old). The idea wasn't so much that the oil was breaking down or anything but that in the first (let's say) 500 - 1,000 miles is where you will gather the most fine particles of metal "dust", (etc.) as the engine breaks in and the metals smooth themselves into place. Dumping that oil gets rid of foreign minute particles floating around in it.
