I always understood that parts that sit on the car vertically (like doors) should be painted oriented that way, and parts that lay flat (parallel to the ground....like a hood) be painted lying flat. The lip should be 'standing' up as though it was on the car when getting paint applied.

You're right I guess about the pearl color being direction dependent. Proper protocol should be followed while painted the body part depending on what part it is. Also, despite all the deligence, chances are the color match won't be perfect...more so in certain lighting conditions.
