With "old school" motors you had a lot of break-in to do before putting too much stress on them. Nowadays, motors are built to much closer tolerances and use materials that don't require a lot of break-in. I wouldn't be too afraid to do some light boost right off the showroom floor ... but 1500-2000 miles sounds like a good idea before pushing the limits (if for no other reason than to weed out any weak parts while under warranty).
