I have the stock shifter knob and like it as is. If I were to take the OEM off, I would grab 1 mouse pad and cut it in half. Wrap one around the base and the other piece around the knob. Apply two pipe wrenches and twist. Pipe wrenches can get just about anything loose given you have space to turn them.
