This sounds like someone who is quite familiar with a SBC and leaking of the rear main is common. The rear mains seal is easy to replace on a SBC especially when the tranny is removed. However, as pointed out already, the Z rear main seals are quite good and last a long time. It's also a replacement that is not forgiving if you make a slight screw up. My advice: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
