Yes, they are dummy spots. I bought mine used and noticed a lot of rattle coming from my rear speakers. After some research, I learned normally the Nis doesn't come with those rear speakers, someone had done me the courtesy of poorly installing some Rockford Phosgates in there. There seems to be a lot of argument about whether a person should install those rears (something about ruining the "racing" performance by adding weight..blah blah blah), but despite the buzzing in mine, I find the extra sound makes for a great musical experience.
