He said/she said doesn't hold up very well in court. Without even a police report, you can't even really prove anything.

I hope all works well for the OP, but I will always advise to properly document and report any accident.
I kind of have to split the difference on the police. Yes, call, but it might not be a good thing.

Early '12 I was driving my new '11 Z that had just passed break-in miles. A guy rear ended someone very hard in the far left lane of the local interstate bypass. It's essentially a four lane racetrack all the way around Indy. I was in the far right lane. He lost control and swerved over and clipped my left front fender with his right rear.

The police were called. The officer decided that since I was in a Red Z Roadster I must have been racing. (Against a beater Malibu. Yeah, right.) He wasn't interested in listening to anything. The claims eventually went to mediation.

I had been testing out a GoPro mounted on the windshield, which officer not-all-that-friendly wasn't the least bit interested in. I paid the ticket - whatcha gonna do? I sent the video to my insurance company. He was found to be 100% responsible.

I'd have still called the police if someone else hadn't, but it doesn't always work out all that well. Perhaps Mrs. Officer had a headache the previous night?

Anyway, OP, good luck. And as everyone else is saying, involve 'em and hope for the best.
