I think in the end I have paid for everything close to 4-5k out of my pocket (doctor visits, surgery, knee braces, physical therapy, etc) and she went through her insurance of course from her company which is very very good. It is a shock to see the initial amount due, was only like 2k for the day of surgery but it is all the extra expenses that can go up.

Well, if I add in the braces, PT, etc that number goes up dramatically. Call it $30-35k in mid 90's dollars. So it's more than doubled in ~15 years.
