Maybe. Maybe not. If I can run 50% longer on the same oil, over a long enough time horizon I end up coming out ahead on cost. I get an analysis every oil change. For $25 I get a look inside the motor to see how things are doing. It's worth it to me. Maybe not for others. If changing the oil at 3k miles makes you more comfortable, go for it. You'll never run into any mechanical issues by changing fluids too often.

+1 on checking it often. There seems to be a lot of guys on this site who think that's not required of a vehicle and seem shocked when something goes south due to lack of oil.
