This is the way to go, and I believe there is a DIY now on how to do it without removing the entire dash. I am not a fan of the cubby door staying on if you add gauges because if you want to view the gauge the door just looks weird open like that while driving & out of place.

You can still do what I have done below with gauges, the main piece is the OEM dash piece (about 300-400 bucks) and then you can mount the gauges back a bit to look cleaner or flush.
