Neat thing about cutting that area is that you can re-insert the plastic air ducts and return the car to near stock.
And if you look at the picture you posted, you will notice that that piece (and the one on the other side) simply unbolt. As a bonus, they provide no real function and can save you maybe 1/4 pound!

You DO NOT HAVE to cut anything. That is how I did mine, individual results may vary...
