While Dallas is by no means a small city the population just doesn't compare to New York. If you look at population density, NYC (not including surrounding areas which are also quite dense) has a population of over 8 million while Dallas is just over 1.2 million. To add to that, Dallas's growth rate isn't very high at just under 180k people within 20 years (compared to NY which increased its population by over 600k). Granted comparing percentage growth, NY isn't very impressive but it's still pulling in three times as many people in the same amount of time.

If you really want an international auto show in Texas then Houston would be a more likely candidate since it has almost double the population of Dallas and a slightly higher growth rate.

Just looking at this from a numbers point of view. Food for thought.
