Over the years my eyes have degraded back to 20-40, not uncommon. One side effect that they don't talk about is dry eye, which adds to vision difficulties.

Would I do it again - Yes. Just be prepared for some minor issues down the road.
thanks, mr. gurney. im in prime time then. my brother had the procedure done 20yrs ago and he's been very satisified. the only thing for me is i have dry eye and there's only a few contacts i can wear without looking like that pict mr.alcheng posted about the bloodshot eyes.

im not sure if i want to increase the dry eye side-effect with lasik... that's really where ive been kinda going back and forth. it's not like i can reverse once i have the procedure done.

Regarding the long term affect on the excessive contact lenses usage... it could take as short as 4-5 years or as long as 10+ years.

Here are couple examples:

( Click to show/hide )

Corneal Vascularization due to lack of oxygen and nutrient from wearing contact lenses:

G.P.C. (Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis) due to dirty or/and over-wear contact lenses:

( Click to show/hide )

Corneal Edema is caused by hydration of cornea thus the cornea becomes swollen:

There are at least 20+ corneal complications caused by improper use of contact lenses which I cannot show everything thus everyone gonna puke and put me in their Iggyland......

But I'm gonna show one last one which is the worst complication a cornea can get.....

Beware......

Corneal Ulcer... it's like cancer, but it's on the cornea.. basically the cornea is 'dead'... could caused by improper using of contact lenses...

Most of the early symptoms of corneal complications, could not be felt or seen, however, until irritations occurs, condition are already pretty bad.

On using contact lenses, once you put the lens on your eye/cornea, the contact-lens (which is a piece of silicon plastic no matter what fancy name they put on the box) starts rubbing against your cornea.

The longer the time you have the lens on your cornea, the more rubbing aka wear & tear is done on your cornea.

Imagine you put a piece of silicon plastic on the back of your hand and rub it against your skin for 18 hours straight non-stop....

So you can do the math, there's 24 hours a day, 18 hours rubbing and only 6 hours for the repairing....

What we've seen a lot is corneal-thinning eventually occurred and the cornea becomes very sensitive thus dry eyes and red eyes and most people will put drops on their eyes....

It's a quick short term relief (relief, NOT a 'fix'), thus they feel comfortable and thought problem is solved thus keep their bad habit and until the discomfort is unbearable thus ask for help from the doctor but there's nothing can be done because the cornea is badly damaged...

Get to a point even surgeon won't perform lasik or PRK because the cornea is in such bad condition they don't want to touch it.

Alright, enough blah blah blah from alcheng cos I am seeing myself being too useful in this post aka de-railed from this thread....

I always tell my customers, "Well, they are your eyes, we can only tell you so much and let you be the judge to decide to, or not to, take the risk, but remember, you only have one pair of eyes..."

Actually, prescription becomes stable as early as 18-19 and as late as 30, so I say mid-30 is a good age to consider refractive surgery.

What happened with you was the technology at that time for lasik was not mature enough.

The scar on the cornea is thick, the laser cannot finely 'shave' the cornea thus cannot obtain an accurate correction.

Lots of complication thus it was a big no no to have lasik surgery done at that time.

However, the technology nowadays are much better, lasik or PRK are both having good result and minimum complications.

But, if you decide to go for it, go for the most expensive thus the best one. Only those are using the most advanced technology/machine.

About $5k to $7k for a pair of eyes.

ICL is not new but not the most popular, I wouldn't try it until the technology on it becomes mature and more advanced.

At least for now, I will suggest Lasik or PRK over ICL.

Personally, not keen on its concept.

alcheng's CAD$0.02

wow, thanks for the warnings and info, mr.alcheng! now i understand better why i need to visit the eyeball repair shop every year. i will investigate more about lasik and study your info again. thanks!!!

im at 0F this am again and roads here are not slick at all... dry or wet, but not icy. yet people still crash..

Thinking I might drive all the way back across town to my wife's work and swap for the Z. Even though it's selfish, there's a chance I can play it off like I was being the good husband and giving back her AT for her painfully long drive home
that's a smart move, mr.jar.

umm....sounds like you are trying to pull a fast one on your wifey?

So I thought I'd give her a respite from dealing with it two times in one week
i prefer MT in heavy traffic vs AT unless im on a constant uphill.

often times my wife says that i contradict myself...actually the issue with me is my mind is always thinking and onto something so wat i might've said in the am is old news vs wat im trying to do current.

so it sounds like im contradicting, but im just making progress.
wait, wat did i just post?
